For those who have Neon Golden,

I was introduced to The Notwist through Neon Golden. If you enjoy Neon Golden, you really must pick up Shrink. It's a bit edgier and darker, but the humans behind the electronics are clearly felt. Also, there is a definite jazz influence - two tracks are jazzy instrumentals, and one or two others have a heavy influence. It adds a cool liquid tone to the art as a whole. That's really the point I'm driving at - Neon Golden is a day trip to the park, while Shrink is a dip in the lake at night. Having heard both, I now recommend that anyone with either Shrink or Neon Golden should get the other as soon as possible.

Amazing album from one of the best bands out there!,

This album is incredible. If you picked up NEON GOLD and are a fan of that than you should definetly check this cd out. It's a little darker and more organic than Neon Gold but it is still very emotive, lush music. They are truly an amazing electronic/Alternative band. I can't wait to hear more from them! Highlights on this album include DAY 7, CHEMICALS, Electric Bear, and NO ENCORES.

I WANT MORE!!,
By Liam (Uxbridge, MA USA) - See all my reviews

This is without a doubt one of the most phenomenal and creative records I have ever had the pleasure of listening to in my many years as a music fan. I purchased this cd without really knowing what to expect. I bought The Notwist's prior 12 release, which is a solid album on it's own but is really helped by the Loop EP that accompanied it. The album was mainly moderate to heavy rock and definitely had its strong points, but the Loop Ep was a wonderful mix of rock, remix, and experimentation. So when I saw Shrink at my local cd retailer, I figured why not take a chance. And what a lucky move that was. Shrink is experimental rock at its finest. It's a magnetic blend of instrument and technology that touches on various musical styles ranging from indie rock to jazz, and the vocals are both creepy and inspiring. This is a must for any fan of experimental rock such as Radiohead's "Kid A", Doves' "Lost Souls", and Swell's "Everybody Wants to Know". Check out the tracks "Day 7", "Chemicals", and "Electric Bear". I just hope this is not the last we've heard from The Notwist. If you're out there, I WANT MORE!!!!

most of the tracks on this pre-neon golden disk are pretty nice, but ELECTRIC BEAR is worth the money alone (and gets another star for this record) sounds a little like mum versus old-skool autechre sitting atop the shoulders of Dntel. unbelievable. No Encores and Chemicals are good too.
also recommended if you like neon golden... but completely inessential unless you're both into notwist already and have an open ear for some less accessible music. this one may take a couple listens to get the hang of... but it's worth it

Precise and Strong,
This review is from: Shrink (Audio CD)
I think this album of Notwist contain very high musical quality combined with strong ambient and rhythms. It is reflecting 1998's pessimistic atmosphere very well. Your Signs, Another Planet and No Encores are the best pieces.
Jazz and Post-Rock is the main ingredients of the album. Electronic beats and chill-out swings are added as a variety. Yet, the reason why this album has not much listeners should be the taste you will get from the album grows after you listen many times and digest the whole spirit.

This German group was already well on its way to establishing their signature glitch-fusion pop, which would lead to breakout success with '02's Neon Golden, on this prior '98 release. Shrink obviously does not have the extensive production efforts found in further albums, but is quite solid in an understated way.

Good,

I became a fan of notwist after their first album and have followed them for three albums--12, shrink, neon golden. Shrink is a great album and continue their experimental atmospheric sounds with this album. This album to me has the best compliments of pop, distortion, rock. The album is a continuous flow of music that deserves compliments in its time period. A true 4 star album.

First of all, to the uninitiated, start with "Neon Golden" - a great album that is one of my favorites of the last 5 years. The question is - if you are a fan of "NG" and want more, where to go next. This album is where I went based on proximity in time to "NG" and what I'd read. Well, "NG" it is not. The best songs here (1,2,3,5,6) are the ones that are closest to NG. After that the album begins to degenerate into something less fresh and ultimately boring (the horns on N.L. and Your Signs sound like bad elevator jazz, Shrink bores). In the end, pick it up if you are a huge fan but don't expect too much. Alternatively, I have been happier finding a post-"NG" fix with newer, similar fare (try Junior Boys "last exit").

Rodriguez Cincopuente on 'Shrink' by The Notwist,

okay, yeah. This CD is fantastic, right. I mean, really good. It is electronic but not the type of electronic that is cold and heartless. Really well written songs and they're sad too so don't listen to this if you are feeling sad. Cool. I recommend this cd to all of my friends who do not already own it.
