Book Description

February 1, 1995
Common-sense solutions to help you take control of your life! If you're fed up with being told "why" you have problems instead of "what you can do about them," the bestselling author of "Divorce Busting" has good news: a radically different approach to solving any problem in your life. Based on the principles of Solution-oriented Brief Therapy (SBT), Michele Weiner-Davis's techniques offer an effective, down-to-earth, simple-to-implement approach that has already helped countless people achieve real, immediate and lasting transformations in their lives. Drawing on more than a decade of experience with individuals, couples and families, Weiner-Davis explains: What makes change -- immediate, enduring change -- possible Why looking to the past for understanding prolongs the problem How to stop unproductive ways of thinking, feeling and acting How to translate overwhelming problems into achievable goals How you can change other people as well as yourself No matter what your problem, no matter how hopeless it seems, "there is a solution," and "Fire Your Shrink!" will help you discover it.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Putting the "self back in self-help" is the stated goal of this exuberant explication of a different therapy approach-solution-oriented brief therapy (SBT), "enabling most people to resolve their problems in three to six sessions." Therapist Weiner-Davis (Divorce Busting) eschews the whys of problems and instead identifies possible solutions that allow some people to feel better about their lives without undergoing extended therapy, and often without the intervention of a therapist. Unorthodox in its approach, SBT uncovers creative solutions shown to work in the vignettes of counseling sessions presented here. Replete with practical problem-solving ideas, this presentation demonstrates an empowering technique that is the polar opposite of the "inner-child" scenario. Illustrations. First serial to Cosmopolitan and Ladies' Home Journal; author tour.

From Booklist

Weiner-Davis explains her title, "When I say `fire your shrink,' what I am really urging you to do is to fire antiquated, ineffectual ways of thinking about problems and how to solve them." She contends that getting to the root of why you have problems does not solve them. The author, a professional therapist, is spitting in the face of contemporary practices and calling for SBT, Solution-Oriented Brief Therapy, which focuses on positive self-affirmation and the pursuit of resolutions. Through anecdotal case studies, she demonstrates how to look for solutions to marital problems, family conflicts, and other personal and relationship crises. More About the Author

Michele Weiner Davis, MSW, is an internationally renowned relationship expert, highly acclaimed speaker and author of several books including the best-selling The Sex-Starved Marriage, and the best-selling Divorce Busting, The Divorce Remedy, Getting Through to the Man You Love, Change Your Life and Everyone in It, and In Search of Solutions. She has appeared as a regular guest on Oprah, 48 Hours, the Today show, CBS This Morning, and 20/20. Michele is the Founder and Director of The Divorce Busting Center with offices in Colorado and Illinois. Her popular websites, www.divorcebusting.com and www.sexstarvedwife.com offer visitors practical information for making their marriages more loving and lusty. She lives in Colorado with her husband.

On a personal note, there was a specific reason Michele developed a passion for helping couples fall in love again and keep their marriages and families together. She grew up in an East Coast version of the Walton family. Michele had two parents who loved her and her two brothers. Her parents never fought. Michele had lots of friends and was a good student, so life for her as a child was wonderful. There was a big extended family, so holidays were warm and memorable.

All this came to a screeching halt when she turned 16 and was a senior in highschool. Her mother sat the whole family down and told them that she had been unhappy for 23 years of marriage. Needless to say, this was a shocking revelation because Michele's parents never fought. Then her mother announced, "There comes a time in everyone's life when you have to throw in the towel." Those words changed Michele's life forever. Not only did her parents marriage dissolve, her warm, nurturing family disbanded completely. Her mother had been the hub of the wheel in the family and when she divorce, she resigned from the position. Michele left for college shortly after this announcement and as she did, her home, her family fell apart.

As a result, Michele has been determined to make her own marriage work and to learn everything she could about what it takes to have a healthy and loving relationship so that she could teach it to everyone who crossed her path. This fire within her led her to specializing in work with couples and writing the best-selling book, Divorce Busting. She feels blessed that she has helped hundreds of thousands of couples to renew their love and decide to make their marriages work. She's convinced that people don't just fall out of love, they simply don't have the skills they need to make love last. And these skills, she believes, can definitely be acquired. Visitors to her web site www.divorcebusting.com find resources to resolve conflict and reconnect. This is her mission in life- to help people restore their love.

2.0 out of 5 stars Quick Fix Solutions Just Aren't!, November 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Fire Your Shrink! Do-It-Yourself Strategies for Changing Your Life and Everyone (Audio Cassette)
This book has an inherent appeal, I must admit. Weiner-Davis' premise, that you really can be your own best agent for postivie personal change, speaks to our individualistic pride. Well and good, we probably *have* become a nation of overly dependent emotional basket-cases.

The problem here is that Weiner-Davis swings way -- way way over -- to the other side of the pendulum. She portrays virtually all personal problems, from addiction to failing marriages, as solvable by the individual. Some of her suggestions are just absurdly overdrawn -- like her mention of the depressed person who decided to go shopping and met someone at the mall who helped her out of her depression. Just change your patterns, Weiner-Davis, suggests, and the solution will appear as if by magic.

This book might be useful for those who can stand a little more personal control over their own lives. I have nothing against that goal. What does concern me, though, is that the overly simplistic, "quick fix" mentality which prevades throughout this book can raise false hopes for people who really do need help from sources outside themselves. In these cases, "Fire Your Shrink" may be setting up certain people for a very, very hard fall after tottering briefly at a precipice of false hope.

...and no, I am NOT a psychologist or therapist of any sort... just someone who likes to see more realistic suggestions!

3.0 out of 5 stars commerical too long, July 3, 2006
I also have Michelle's book for getting your man to do what you want. This audiocassette had most of the same things in it - 'cept it wasn't geared toward just changing men.

I like her ideas and have used a few of them myself successfully. However, the beginning of this audiocassette is WAY too long. It's basically a commercial for her method of helping people - which sounds great - but I didn't buy this book-on-tape to hear a commercial! I wanted her to get to the point and tell me how to do this stuff.

I suggest saving your money and not buying the audiocassette since you will have to listen again and again to the commercial. Having the book is better because you can flip thru to just the information you want/need at the time.

The book has a 'commercial' in the beginning too, but you don't have to read that part any more than just the first time. With an audiocassette, if you want to listen to the ideas again, you have to listen to the commercial again.

Books-on-tape are GREAT, but in this case, she takes too long to get to the point. The book with pages to flip thru is much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great alternative approach to problem solving !, May 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fire Your Shrink! Do-It-Yourself Strategies for Changing Your Life and Everyone (Audio Cassette)
This tape offers a refreshing and effective alternative to the traditional psychoanalytic approach to personal problems. It was read by the author;this was an additional plus. I found the tapes both engaging in style and practical in application. Hearing the concepts Ms. Weiner-Davis presents helped me refocus my energy in a big way!The tapes were so helpful ,in fact, that I sought out more of Ms. Weiner-Davis's work and found them equally engaging!
