Book Description

Book 1 of the Shrouded Series

Winner of the Ready-Set-Go Peninsula RWA Contest
Finalist in the Suzannah North Louisiana RWA Contest
1st place in Peninsula RWA Chapter’s contest.

Jake Preston is on borrowed time. If he doesn’t stumble upon a miracle and soon, he’ll end up dead. And even if he does, he still might end up dead with a clever killer hounding his heels. He believes that the one miracle and antidote to save him is in Margot Davenport’s house, across the country and miles away from Boston. Somewhere locked in her home is the key to reversing an experiment that is killing him.

Margot doesn’t particularly care if she ends up dead. She’s lost everything she’s ever cared for. A divorce and the loss of her job as a corporate lawyer has left her with little faith in herself or in anyone else. Most importantly, she’s lost the one person on this earth she’s looked up to and cherished–her brother, Johnny. His death in a car accident has devastated her, and she can’t find the willpower to pull herself from the chasm she’s fallen into. Her only solace is at the bottom of a wineglass. Having moved back to the small town in northern Arizona where she was raised, she’s made a point of isolating herself both mentally and physically from everyone other than a few chosen friends. Little does she know that her life is going to explode into chaos and the person behind Johnny's death is coming after her.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid Mystery/Thriller April 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Margot has had it rough in the last several years. Her marriage ends, she loses her job, and the icing on the cake, her brother dies. She turns to alcohol and lets just say this woman is a complete and total wreck of emotions. I enjoyed how H.D. Thomson portrayed her grief. Some people actually fall completely and totally apart when facing such dire circumstances and drown themselves in alcohol. And you know what, maybe she shouldn't have opened that door, but with the bad comes good.... right?

Jake swings into her life and turns it upside down. He brings with him a cloud of mystery and weird events. Margot begins to feel like a ghost, her brother?, may be with her. Is that just the alcohol or is there something really going on?

Jake is such a great alpha man who is not afraid to express his feelings and thoughts on his current situation. I love how he is with Margot.

This book is hard to classify, at times it felt paranormal and then at others it felt sci-fi.

Above all a solid mystery/thriller!

This is book 1 in a 3 book series.

I'm an admitted grammar nazi and book snob, so when I read something by an author new to me, I try to be forgiving. The story is intriguing, the characters have some depth and there's enough mystery to keep one reading through to the end. That said, if it weren't for the awkward "love scenes" (sex scenes), I would've give it four stars. This author needs to stay away from phrases like "come on baby, feel the rush" and other cheesy crap no one says, let alone wants to hear. I am hopeful that her next attempt will be more expansive in vocabulary and whit, while at the same time telling a great story as she did the first time around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy Thriller April 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Two very troubled characters, Margot and Jake, have a mystery to unravel, a bad guy to outwit, and a truckload of problems to overcome to survive this story. A wonderful twist on a classic paranormal/sci fi concept is at the heart of this book, but the author reveals the secrets slowly, taking the reader on a thrilling and scary journey to discover what is going on. A budding relationship and some hot romance adds to the story and the stakes. An unexpected twist at the end finished the story off nicely. A fast and exciting read.

BRIEF SUMMARY

Margot's life is spiraling out of control, she lost her job, got a divorce and her brother and best friend Johnny was killed in a car accident. Margot could care less what happens to her and is drinking her life away. Jake is dying and the possible cure lies in Margot's house. Jake worked with Johnny at Miltronics and became friends. Now his friend is dead along with others from Miltronics and Jake is on his way. Can he find his cure and stop a killer in his tracks?

THOUGHTS

This is a suspenseful story! Margot is broken and a lonely woman who drinks wine to numb the pain. Jake shows up at her door trying to gain her trust and allow him to stay with her so he can look for the disk that may help cure his condition. This is dangerous for Jake since he has heard so much from Johnny about his dear sister, Margot and already has feelings for her. Malcolm is Margot's ex and also works for Miltronics and plays a hand in the secrets lies and murders. Margot and Jake find comfort in each other's arms to ease the pain but feelings are quickly developing. Margot knows Jake is hiding something and Jake is determined to keep Margot safe even if it costs him his life. This story is a page turner full of suspense and desire. I found myself rooting for Margot and Jake and a lifetime of happiness!! My applause to the author on an entertaining read.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Long Time to Get Into It June 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
First, on a positive note, the writing and character development was outstanding. Detail was not lacking in the book. However, it was not until 57% KM (Kindle Measurement) that I had any idea where the author was taking us. It then picked up but slowed down again until the last little part of the book. I wish it was more engaging in the beginning but like my plate of food I had to finish and the ending helped to pull up the nose at the end.

Shrouded in Darkness (Shrouded Series)
A friend suggested I read this paranormal suspense. Boy, I'm glad I did.
Impressive prose and word choices enhance tension from the start. The story unfolds with edge of the seat suspense which caused me to jump more than once as I read (I admit to being a "weinie" about scary things).

Thomson writes solid romance with variety to engage the senses with sizzling love scenes. The characterization invested this reader in the outcome. Dialogue was crisp and top notch. I look forward to reading the rest of this well written series.
