5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book for ID!
This is one of a series of Southwest books. All are great. This one was not a disappointment. Fairly easy to carry in a backpack with good plant descriptions. Not many color photos, but the line drawings are second-to-none. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in SW plants.

3.0 out of 5 stars For amateurs.
I think the drawings should be better and the book should have some pictures of the plants listed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing illustrations, January 5, 2012

I am a new gardener in the southwest with a strong interest in native plants and was quite excited to find this reasonably priced book. After purchasing it, however, I was disappointed to find the quality of the illustrations to be inconsistent. Some are fine, but others bear only a passing resemblance to the plants in question. I doubt I will be able to use this alone as a field guide. At best, it will provide complimentary information on plants that I have already identified with other resources.

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent casual reference, October 31, 2011
This review is from: Shrubs & Trees of the Southwest Deserts (Paperback)
This is a good source for a casual plant enthusiast. It is fairly well organized, decently priced and while I would prefer color pictures, the drawings are well rendered. What this is not is a comprehensive listing of all the tree and shrub species in the southwest. I would not count on it as your only professional plant reference for the area.
