5.0 out of 5 stars Sooooo Scary!, September 18, 2000

Only the person who does my laundry knows how much terror this CD strikes in me. Ever since I heard "Hank Watson Stalks the Earth" I've had nightmares of being tortured by rabid poodles. After listening to "Down in the Lab", I developed a twitch in my right eye and started walking with a limp (that was four years ago).

If there is a god, then why is Deadbolt allowed to torment me?

This music gives me the heebie-jeebies. I used to be a productive member of society, but after listening to Deadbolt I had to quit my job as a stockbroker and find part-time work at a mortuary.

I think the members of Deadbolt are bad people- someone should spank them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deadbolt Stalks the Earth, February 18, 2006

This debut cd by the San Diego based band sets the tone for all that has followed. The guitar riffs of "Hank Weston Stalks the Earth" or "Down in the Lab" are the essence of creepy! Singer Harley Davidson's voice has a way of lurking in your subconscious and resurfacing to haunt you when you least expect it. While the band has moved on to do bigger, better cds, this one is a tried and true favorite and worth owning if you're a casual listener or psychobilly/voodoobilly fanatic. Once Deadbolt grabs you, they never let go!

Yes! thank god for deadbolt. dark storytelling in an age of sunshine and lollypop music! the song where he sings about having cokes in his icebox and watching "bring me the head of alfredo garcia" is a timeless classic. ive been searching for a band like this for a long time!

All Deadbolt is good, but this is the best. Better yet, see them live so Harley can tell you what to do with yourself! If you want to be scared buy an album by the scariest band in the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars You Say I'm Mad? That May Be So..., August 21, 2010

It's easy to dismiss these guys as a one-joke novelty band, and in my opinion, the terms "voodoobilly" and "psychobilly" won't help dissuade anyone of that idea.

I remember thinking this was really funny and hip back when I was 18, however. I saw them play in places like Porter's and the Casbah in San Diego in the mid-nineties, and they really rocked. They made good use of primitive but humorous gimmicks on stage to augment the campy sci-fi theme.

This is the album that captures the moment when the joke was fresh. It's got a little bit of the Cramps' B-movie horror schtik, although the musical style is closer to surf than rockabilly. With a repetitive simplicity, they keep the beat going at a steady pulse from start to finish. Somehow, it's really pretty catchy.

The vocals are delivered with a kind of beatnik monotone, never really delivering much in the way of melody, but deftly filling the spaces between the notes all the same. At times the singer catches the listener off guard with a sudden yelp of terror, or else the muffled revelation of some dark secret.

Although the joke eventually wore thin, I have to give them credit for hitting the nail on the head with this one, and perhaps also with the follow up album, Tiki Man.
