Product Description

If you were a Jew you needed no last name ... we were all one big family ... and we all had the same tsuris, excuse me, I mean troubles...

Shtetl is the story only about what life was like in my shtetl, a small Jewish village in Eastern Europe. At one time, there were many shtetls in Eastern Europe, but they and the lives led in them are no more.

And I am the last remembered patriarch of the family in this story.

I began my physical life on earth in the year 1820. The shtetl ... the little village, in Poland, where I lived my entire life, came into existence, maybe three centuries earlier. In all that time, little changed for either of us, except maybe the misery got worse. We both, the shtetl, and I, ended our time on earth together.

So you might ask how it is, if I am no more that my story will get told?

Well, when you are here ... here in what you call the "hereafter" or "the afterlife"... but God forbid, it shouldn't happen to you 'till you're a hundred and twenty ... you'll understand it all...

5.0 out of 5 stars Shtetl - A Thoroughly Engaging Book, September 10, 2011
By
Peggy West (Washington State) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shtetl - the story of a life no more (as told from the hereafter) (Jewish Historical Fiction) (Kindle Edition)
Othniel Seiden's narrator in "Shtetl" is so much that of a storyteller that it feels like he is sitting across the table having coffee. The book begins as the story of one Jewish family living in a small village, or "shtetl", in Poland. The narrator tells the story of his family through the generations that continue to present day. The journeys that the family take to live the life it wants or to protect itself are fascinating, particularly one journey on foot through Eastern Europe to Israel. The book describes how Jews came to live in Poland, the scapegoating of Jews in Eastern Europe and supplies the facts of Jewish resistance. What is particularly striking about this book is the voice of the narrator. The writer manages a closeness, never writing from behind a curtain, although the material is painful at times. I like this book so much that I plan to read parts of it again.

We all wish we knew more about our personal heritage. One's search often leads to names, facts, places, etc. Othniel's book provides you a "heritage journey" that leads directly into you heart. I am so honored to recommend this book!

More About the Author

I do not have a literary background, though I did a year of graduate study at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, my real background is medical. I graduated from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1964 and practiced for 44 years, first as a General Practitioner, and the last 30 as an E.R. doc. I began writing as an avocation to help me unwind after a long day in the E.R. My writing went in two directions, one Historical Fiction, and the other Medical Self-Help, my forte translating medical information into easily understood lay language. In recent years that Self-Help has been more in the direction of Baby Boomer and senior health and emotional problems.
My Historical Novels deal mainly with Judaical, Holocaust, and Biblical History. Most of my books are both in print and on Amazon Kindle. Please enjoy! With over 40 books published by 10 different publishers I've been named Colorado's most prolific author. Google Othniel Seiden
