"The Shuffleboard Queens" is the perfect name for this album. Like the song from which it takes its name, the album is at once funny, thoughtful, and a little poignant. 2.0 out of 5 stars pleasant after a good beating...
I found this CD on a bus from Philly to NY. I took it home and listened to it and then tried to find the rightful owner so I could pummel him. I was unable to do this so I brought it to my local police precinct. Five hours later my door was kicked in and three cops beat me with my own toaster oven until I lost conciousness. It has a certain noisy intense quality...

"The Shuffleboard Queens" is the perfect name for this album. Like the song from which it takes its name, the album is at once funny, thoughtful, and a little poignant. Deirdre spans all kinds of musical styles to drive home her insights on rogue boob fairies, new shoes, and America's sweethearts, cheerleaders. The album itself lures you in with the uptempo and hilarious "We Fit Right", and maintains that pulse until "Marrow of My Bone" shows you that Deirdre's not just goofing around. The lyrics are clever, and her vocals range from playful to endearing, without sinking into sappiness.

This is my favorite album of the new millenium...pick it up and I think you'll agree.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable for everyone, December 7, 1999

Dierdre Flint has universal appeal. In fact, just about everyone I've played her CD for or taken to one of her shows has walked away a fan -- usually with their own copy of The Shuffleboard Queens. Her songs are a wonderful blend of intellectual, sincere and funny; yet her serious songs are poetic and melancholy, especially the Jim Croce-esque "Marrow of My Bone". She is the perfect mix of Julie Brown (the "Earth Girls Are Easy" version, not the Downtown one) and William F. Buckley, only funnier than both of them, and certainly more identifyable. Her lyrics paint images almost all of which we could see ourselves in (even that fishbowl overlooking the Jersey Bay). Being in the Top Ten Folk Bestsellers is definitely deserved.

4.0 out of 5 stars You should buy this CD!, May 21, 1999

Guaranteed smiles. The songs here range from hilarious (King of the Rollerama, Cheerleader) to inspired introspection (Marrow of my Bone). Deirdres funky middle-eastern flavored tribute to a Belly Dancing teacher (Introduction to Belly Dancing)is one of the more beautiful songs I have ever heard. The title track is another touching song about making up the distance put between friends by time and circumstance. If your a Springsteen fan you'll love "Fishlands", a clever Bruce inspired tune about life in a bayfront fishbowl. You could say single women will find the most to relate to in Deirdres lyrics, but you don't have to be a single woman to appreciate her extraordinary talent as a singer/songwriter. Enjoy!

My best friend sent me this CD and told me to listen to Shuffleboard Queens immediately. So what I want to know? Did Deirdre go to high school with me?! The lyrics are mirror images of what my friend and I went through back in the 80's. So funny...

Hi! I am a 9th grader at a school in Villanova PA. Deirdre graduated from my school in 1985 and she played about 7 songs for us the other day. I was so excited. I listen to her over and over again. This is a great investment. She is funny and witty.

lyrical, confident songwriting, with catchy hooks and inventive, colorful characters emerging through snatches of irony and self-deprecating fun; if you haven't seen her live, at least get the cd.....someone needs to tell the indigo girls about this perfect opening act!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bright and Uplifting, January 4, 2004
This review is from: The Shuffleboard Queens (Audio CD)
I really enjoy the music on this cd. Although it is funny the first time and that part of its initial charm is really shock value, this type of banter and wit is not common in music, I think that the music remains enjoyable. For me, the enjoyment stems from Flint's genuine and straightforward performances. Not only is the music solid and the lyrics entertaining and well-written, but Flint is so sweet, sprightly, and sincere in her delivery, you feel taken in and uplifted as she pokes fun at herself and the pitfalls of being a woman in America, and details her coming of age and good and bad times.
When I hear the beginning of cheerleader, for example, I want to sing a long and it makes me feel buoyant when I'm in a bad mood. I don't think it's gimmicky at all, actually. It does have a different narrative feeling than most folk music, pop music, rock or anything except musical theater. Ah, maybe that's the attraction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing poetry, February 7, 2000

I bought this album on the strength of customer reviews. Thanks Amazonites - what a good choice that was! Flint's wonderful lyrics, paired with some thoughtful harmonic progressions to reflect the words are a joy to listen to. Each song tells a story; this is not background music - it's active listening time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just buy it!, June 12, 1999

Deirdre has captured my heart as one of Philadelphia's best songwriters. be warned though, her dead-pan humor will catch you off guard and make you laugh uncontrollably. Later on you'll find yourself singing phrases from the songs "Boob Fairy" and "Cheerleader". And remember this is not a album about people, it's about fish. And that's kind of important to the plot of the songs.
