5.0 out of 5 stars If money is no object.
These knives are on sale NOW! At ONLY $165.00 they are a steal. I was able to get these on Amazon's Gold Box deals for $200.00 at Christmas. I just bought a second set at this lower price.

They are perfectly balanced and come in a neat bamboo box. They are the sharpest blade edges imaginable. I bought a cheap London Broil and grilled it. This is usually...

3.0 out of 5 stars Expected better
Firstly the knives look and feel beautifull, the steel is top notch but there are a few things that could be done better. Notably the varnish on the handles look cheap, its thin and not properly applied in a few places. The bamboo box is nice but also in some areas the finish was poor. I'm not sure if this was a manufacturing defect or damage done after it had left the...

This is usually a pretty tough piece of meat that you have to cut across the grain to be able to chew. Well I am not kidding these knives cut through the meat without effort. My wife and son could not stop commenting on how much fun it was to use these knives. My son was cutting paper thin slices of meat and enjoying every bite, not his usual half-cow sized bites.

These knives are worth every penny. Don't wait I don't know how long this sale will last. You will not regret spending only $40.00 per knife when you see what you get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Construction, February 5, 2008

These work beautifully and their presentation is great!

I bought this set as a gift for my parents, who, even after 29 yrs of marriage, never bought high quality steak knives. For them, if they were going to buy expensive knives, they had better be "the best." Now, my father is still talking about great the outstanding craftsmanship and the perfection and precision of the sharp blade. He is very detail oriented and having these knives pass his stamp of approval certainly means a lot. My uncle was also impressed that he was able to cut through his steak in a single swipe, with very little effort! While they are a little expensive, you cannot beat the quality of these knives!!

And if you are nervous that you will not want to use them because they are heirloom quality, don't be. You will enjoy using them so much, that you won't want to put them away!

I also purchased this back before Christmas and got in on a Gold Box deal for $200. At that time I thought it was a great deal, and I still do. These knives are sold for $349 almost everywhere else on the web and B&M. They are ridiculously sharp, VERY well balanced, and look phenomenal. The handles are trimmed out with brass medallions and rings. The bamboo kit is also a great added touch to protect them when not in use. In all I would say Amazon's normal price of $256 for these is still a very good deal if you're in the market. If not, just wait it out and eventually their $200 deal will "probably" return. So if you've got the loot, and a need for them, dive in! Worth every penny.

Picked up the set in gold box sales for $149. It's expensive, but it certainly does the job well. Really does slice thru steak with ease. Though the blade is scary to clean, any accident, blood is unavoidable, so my wife does not like it because it's too sharp. Construction itself is perfect, the weight of it, how it holds in your hand, all done nicely.

The box is very nice as well. Finally it comes down to the price. At $149, I thought it's alreay overpriced, but still reasonable and within range. If I had to spend the full price of $300, I can't say it's worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars quality knives, May 4, 2009

These are indeed very nice knives, picked them up on a Gold Box deal for $149.00.

As previous reviews state, the knives are surprisingly sharp, the blades have a stunning finish, and the handles are both beautiful and comfortable in the hand. I found the storage box to be of excellent quality as well without defect.

One minor nit- on one side of the blade the word "Shun" is applied to the blade rather than embedded into the steel, while a nearby larger black letter is embedded. In other words, it feels raised as if it was painted on. The first time I used the knives, while cleaning it felt like there was a tiny piece of dried potato or something stuck on the knife. Took me a while, and a magnifier, to discover the Shun applied label. Personally, I feel a steel of this quality should be mirror smooth without any irregular raised portions for ease of cleaning. Considering the cost of the knives, I will have to deduct one star for this.

Otherwise perfect !

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and functional, December 24, 2008
This review is from: Shun 4-Piece Rosewood Handle Steak Knife Set (Kitchen)
My box arrived a couple of days ago, and so I cannot comment yet on anything long-term, but these knives are a complete joy. Firstly they are both beautiful and visually interesting. The Damask (a pattern weld in this case IIRC) draws the eye, and the slight variances in the handles remind you that you are dealing with real wood. I can find no flaws with the construction, though to my taste a good storage box (that held say 8 in this space) would be better than a display box, and for some reason the emblem on the handle is "down" when in the display case. They have made quite the conversation piece at Christmas-eve dinner.

BTW: Although these knives are listed in the "classic" set, and there may be a construction difference, they have the emblem and brass-rings of the "elite" set.

As to cutting: well, I'm looking for more things to cut. They have been an absolute joy on meats! If they last a while before needing sharpening, I'm getting four or eight more and these will be passed down someday to my children.

I purchased these on a whim. I am so happy I did, I have never been this impressed by a steak knife. good presentation, good feel, and its amazing at how well it cut through a rib eye. It was like butter, I went and got one of my JA Henckels steak knifes and did a side by side test on same steak. two to three saws with the henckel one pull with the Shun. I am now a fan and will be looking at other Shun products. Thanks Amazon for the killer sale price and putting it in the deal box so I stumbled across it.

Notably the varnish on the handles look cheap, its thin and not properly applied in a few places. The bamboo box is nice but also in some areas the finish was poor. I'm not sure if this was a manufacturing defect or damage done after it had left the factory. The blade though is second to none. Having said that considering the price you are paying for the knives you'd expect the best. I'd consider the normal range or even the elite both of which currently cost more.
