Perfect storage for your Japanese knives!,

No one ends up with just a couple of good Japanese Kitchen knives. I had just bought several expensive knives and my old block just wouldn't fit the larger blades of the Japanese knives. This one was made for the wider knives. Mine holds a couple of gyutos, a Banno Bunka, Nakiri, 2 pettys, and I measured it and it will house my new Hiromoto Sujihiki slicer, the longest one.I like the slanted angle and the arrangement of the slots makes for easy entry and removal without other knives gettng in the way. Good price at about $60 as I believe it sold for about $90, although I dont think I would buy it at that price. The best feature is that it will hold 4 WIDE CHEF type knives....most others don't And the HORIZONTAL layout is easier on the blades...won't dull them. The other one I have is vertical and the blade road cuts against the block when you withdraw the knife.

As I slowly replace my old Sabatiers with new Shuns I sprung for their block. I've actually never owned a "knife block" before so I have nothing to compare this little bamboo beaut to but I am impressed by its ability to both sit on a counter and hold knives of different sizes all at the same time. Mine came with a discreet Shun logo on a brushed aluminum plate pressed onto the lovely bamboo. Some block!

Good Number of Large Slots,

I had two knife blocks - one for the most frequently used and the other holding everything else. Having acquired the Shun Utility knive, as well as two Santokus, I needed more large slots than I had in my current block, but did not want slots for steak knives. This one is perfect. Holds the 7" and 5.5" Shun Santokus on the left side if you are facing the block side, the Utility "spreader" knife at the top right, and one of my Wusthof chefs on the right, as well as five smaller knives. The slot for the shears is a little large for my Wusthof shears, but it's fine. Love the bamboo, and mine has the Shun logo on the front.

This functional bamboo shun block is a good storage solution for my Shun knives and gets them out of the drawer and will prevent them from damage, however the block doesn't provide space for the Shun cleaver.

This replaced a 30 year old knife block that had seen better days, but we finally outgrew it with the most recent knife purchase. I like the fact that this is a bamboo product. I don't think I realized that two of the eleven slots are not for knives, so I am back at capacity. The wider slots accommodate both chefs' knives as well as santoku. Having the slots configured vertically is good, better for the sharp edge of the blade.

Never had a knife slip out of this thing, or, uh, anything else bad. The slots go all the way through, so be careful not to put long knives in short holes.

Need a really good knife block,

The Shun knife block that I reciently purchaced through Amazon more than meets expectation. It is attractive and holds all of my shun knives with the ecption of my Shun Onion chiefs knife (it comes with it's own mount). My only problem with the block is that there are slots to fill and Shun kinves are expensive, you always pay up for the best.

Bamboo Block, Lots of Space,
This review is from: Shun 11-Slot Bamboo Block (Kitchen)
I got this block for Christmas, but was gonna add it to my collectionPros - 1.) Enough slots for my rag tag set of knives. 8 inch chefs, 7 inch santoku, 2 types of paring knives, 3 inch veggie knife, 6 inch deba, and honing steel. Fits them all wonderfully and with slots to spare. Lengthy block to allow for longer knives. 2.) Bamboo is very nice quality. No marring of the block. Texture of it is very nice to look at. Cons - 1.) Could use some steak knife slots if you had them, I don't but could be a con for some. Overall a very nice block. It probably wont serve the needs of every at home chef, but for me it couldn't get any better. |
