Product Description

This "Internet Special" set consists of 3 Shun Classics: the 4-Inch Perfect Paring Knife, the 6-Inch Ultimate Utility Knife and the 7-Inch hollow-ground Santoku Knife. The Perfect Paring Knife works wonders for paring apples or coring fruits, and provides the perfect blade for delicate garnishing. The 6-Inch Ultimate Utility Knife is anything but utilitarian; the blade length and weight of the knife is perfect for all-around kitchen prep, but it is also a stunner in and out of the knife block. The 7-Inch Hollow-Ground Santoku (Japanese meaning "three virtues") slices, dices and minces its way through meats and vegetables alike, and the hollow-ground feature reduces knife drag and keeps food from sticking to the blade. These three Classic Shun knives are the perfect starter set for the novice, or complement the knives of the established professional. Knife blades are made with a razor-sharp 16 degree cutting angle on each side, and is made of Japanese AUS8A stainless steel for flexibility and strength. The ebony Pakkawood handle has that sleek, sophisticated look that makes these knives feel more like art, than instrument, while providing a comfortable grip that is moisture resistant. Crafted in Seki City Japan, Shun Classics are forged in the tradition of samurai sword making. These heirloom quality knives will be a prized treasure you'll want to pass down to family for generations.

I already had a set of other Shun knives, but could not resist adding this particular group to my collection. They are all an excellent size. I find myself using my small and medium sized Shuns most of the time, reserving the larger ones for especially large tasks. The Sankotu is of course terrific. The utility knife (that can spread as well as cut) is the ultimate sandwich knife; I've had my eye on that one for over a year. The rather odd shaped paring knife has been surprisingly useful. I wouldn't have chosen it by itself, but now find I'm using it almost every day. Shun knives are a bit demanding: you can't cut in to anything with bone in it, unless you're very, very careful not to hit the actual bone (which can chip the Shun's delicate blade). You must hand wash and dry the knives. But Shuns are worth it!

I have two other Shun blades, and got this set on a whim during a lightning sale. This is a great three piece set in terms of balancing utility and use, and could be all most home-chefs would need. The utility knife and paring knife are useful in the most random situations, and the chopping blade is useful for everything else. They stay sharp and will cut through anything. Would consider this a great house-warming or wedding present for aspiring chefs in your life.

I have now bought 3 sets of these knives for myself, family and friends. They make cooking/preparing foods a joy given how incredibly sharp they are. My family was skeptical as to how much sharper these could possibly be, but ate their words on first use.

Unlike some other reviews, I would not recommend using a honing steel/sharpener on the knives as:
a) if you take care of them, they should maintain their edge for a very long time:
- use on a correct cutting board (plastic/bamboo etc.)
- store correctly in a block/magnetic holder - make sure the knife is not resting on its edge in the block
- don't cut into bones etc.
- use the correct cutting motion and do not push the edge of the blade straight down into the board without any back or forward motion...this will cause your blade to chip
b) you can send the knives off to shun for free sharpening after a few years when they do need it
c) it takes skill (which I don't have) to hone/sharpen at exactly the right angle

Although the paring and utility knives have slightly odd shapes, you will get used to them in no time. I actually find I use the utility knife more for my everyday cutting/chopping these days than the santoku. Only other knife I would add to my set is a chef's knife.

In terms of price, I bought each set for approx. $160. This set seems to go on sale fairly regularly for this price, so I would not recommend purchasing for the regular $300.

You can never go wrong with Kershaw or Shun.

Very very good quality. I don't know what that "utility knife" is used for in the beginning. But it works amazingly well when cutting raw meet.

This set of knives is absolutely amazing and the price for them when I bought it during a lightning deal is great! All 3 knives do the job they are supposed to do and it makes kitchen tasks easier than other knives I've used. I've used the Santoku to cut through Beef Chuck with ease during preparation to cook the meat.
