While the cost might be high, the quality and materials used are fantastic. Everything is made to last and the Shun blades are razor sharp. For those with all the gadgets, this is definitely another one to add to the bunch, you won't be disappointed. Plus, with the handle's construction, cutting yourself is impossible when used as shown.

This is a great mandolin. I have several Shun knives and they are of excellent quality so I expected the same for the mandolin. It is as I expected. I had one small problem with the main blade...there are two pieces of plastic that hold it in place in the mandolin and one broke off when I was removing the blade. I don't know if it was pilot error or if it is just a weak point in the blade. I emailed Shun and received a new blade within a few days...free of charge...no questions asked. That kind of service is truly unique and unexpected in these times. I think if I am just more careful next time it will not continue to be a problem. This mandolin is worth the investment if you can afford it. I know I tried a few of the cheap models and was never satisfied.

I love this mandoline! Excellent quality. I have only used the slicer (mostly for slicing potatoes for potatoes au gratin. But I will use the other blades at some point.I purchased this for $300 on sale, which i thought was a little steep. But given that it is the only high quality slicer on the market that is safe to use (no chance of losing fingers).

The price is ridiculous but then it's not so smart to throw $100+ in the garbage can, which is what happens when you buy the others. We sliced up 5 potatoes for pommes anna in a couple of minutes - French fries are a snap - and no cutting glove, no fear you'll be serving French fried finger. This thing just works, and it's safe. The most dangerous operation is washing the very sharp blade. Its only flaw is the lack of a scallop blade...O well. One year later: A big plus is that we use this a lot more than we did the old French ones, mostly because the fear factor is gone. The blade is infinitely sharper too - the always dull blades on the other kinds is one of the things that make them so dangerous to use.

This Shun Mandoline far exceeds other Mandolines we have purchased. The lifetime warranty helps ease the high cost, but the quality is top notch. My husband owns his own catering business and uses his daily!!

I bought this a year ago last Christmas so I've have had it for a year and three months. It creates an expectation that I didn't find it lived up to. It does an amazing job with potatoes, fennel, onions carrots that can be sliced paper thin but struggles with ripe tomatoes. I check th eblade and it seems razor sharp but If the tomato is on the ripe side I could only get it to slice if I sliced it by hand using a back and forth sawing motion to get the blade to slice through the skin. This practice is not to be recommended and defeats the purpose of the safety hopper. So I slice ripe tomatoes by hand. Also I had trouble with the first slice of anything specially round such as apples or particularly round potatoes. If the platform on which the item to be sliced slides is dry, round items tend to try to roll as you push the safety hopper down the slide. You need to wet the surface or cut a slice off the bottom by hand before inserting it into the hopper.Having said that, sliced potatoes in whatever thickness you want, you can't even feel the resisitance as you slide the hopper across the blade. I really like the sturdiness and the fact that you can sharpen the blade. I have the feeling that the sharply angled V blade on a ten dollar plastic mandoline would probably slice ripe tomatoes better. I have sharpened the blade with a steel a couple of times since I got it - I might try stropping it to see if that helps. I sharpen my own woodworking tools so I think I know what I'm doing when it comes to sharpening. |
