This review is from: Shunka: Life with an Arctic Wolf (Paperback)
This is the true story of a well-intentioned couple who wanted to raise a wolf cub, and did their very best to do so in a healthy way. Because the story is true, it chronicles both the wonderful joys of life with a wild animal, and the many drawbacks associated with life with a wolf. This isn't an educational book about wolves - there are plenty of those out there - this is a story of day to day life with a wolf cub and adolescent wolf. It's an easy and enjoyable read, and you may find surprising the many contrasts between the dog and the wolf in this family, who grow up together - but are wired quite differently. If you love wolves and have ever dreamed of raising an orphaned cub, this book is a must-read, and sets out why that is not a good idea without disparaging wolves. Wolves, while wonderful creatures, have not evolved to be man's best friend like the dog - and for good reason, as man remains their enemy for the most part. An enjoyable read for the dog lover, wolf lover, or anyone who wants to read a good story about life with animals we are not usually privileged to know well.
