Tailored for performers of every level, the affordable Shure PG81 sensitive, flat response condenser microphone is ideal for picking up cymbal crashes as well as acoustic instruments. The compact PG56 mic is ideal for close miking, while the high-performance PG52 kick drum microphone is tuned to capture low-end punch. All three feature a cardioid polar pattern that picks up the most sound from in front of the microphone and some sound from the sides, and is less susceptible to feedback in high volume settings.

Have been using this Shure PGDMK6-XLR drum set microphone kit for a couple weeks now and I love it. I use it to record my practice. Only downside I've encountered is that the supplied cables are only 15 ft long, which even in my small setup is too short (need 25 ft). I mounted the PG81 condenser mics overhead over my cymbals using boom stands, the PG52 in front of my bass drum using a mini boom stand (referred to as kick drum/amp mic stand) and the PG56s on my snare and toms (I am buying more PG56s for my floor toms). All the mics sound awesome, very warm and clean. The PG56s and PG52 are super directional and pickup almost nothing from other drums. The PG81s have a more open pickup pattern which works great for overhead miking and I see (hear) no need to have individual mics for hi-hat and cymbals. The rim mounts are just perfect for the PG56s, just mount and forget. I run all the mics into a Behringer XENYX 2442 mixer with USB interface, which I run into Studio Mini XL app on my iPad via iPad camera kit USB adapter. Still experimenting with all this but so far I have been very happy with the results.

I am giving 4 stars because I am basically ignorant of what else is out there in comparison. But, these mics work well to isolate the individual drums and allows you more control over the mix as a result. I haven't used them much, but in the echo chamber basement I have the drums set up, it sounded good. I didn't get much background noise and echo like I did with another overhead mic I was using. I am hoping that after I build my studio and have a more isolated enclosed space, these mics will be my only drum mics.
