Intended for wired applications, the SM93 is powered by phantom power supplied by broadcast, sound reinforcement or recording equipment, or an external phantom supply, and it includes a preamplifier assembly for connection to three-pin professional (XLR) audio connectors.

The SM93 is supplied with a sew-on mounting bracket, a mounting block with attached tie bar, and an acoustic windscreen to minimize wind noise in outdoor applications. It is also supplied with a dual mounting block with attached tie bar.

Mounting the Microphone
The tie clips and mounting bracket provided with the SM93 allow the user to wear the microphone in a variety of ways. To achieve optimum pickup, attach the microphone to the user's chest. You can also obtain high-quality sound when the microphone is worn in the hair, sewn into clothing, or attached to an acoustic instrument such as a guitar.

• Tie Clip. A spring-loaded clasp attaches easily to a necktie, lapel, blouse, or shirt. Snap the microphone into the clip's mounting bracket and attach the clip to an article of clothing. The dual tie clip supplied with the SM93 provides simultaneous mounting of two microphones.
• Sew-On Bracket. Sew the supplied sew-on mounting bracket directly to a garment (Figure 1). Use dark or light thread as necessary to match the color of the bracket.

We are using this for a video surveillance application and we are amazed by the sensitivity in picking up conversations from far away. It turns out that a pro lavelier mic is perfect for this purpose because it's tiny and omnidirectional. Just remember you'll need a phantom power supply. Although "phantom" power supply sounds mysterious it's nothing more than a power supply that has an XLR input and output. With this setup you can have a long XLR mic cable without introducing line noise (if you use a regular mic with a phono/RCA cable the line would pick up a lot of noise at longer distances). The output of the phantom power supply can be converted from XLR to phono/RCA with a short converter cable. Get this mic if you need to pick up tip-toes and whispering in the distance.

Pure and simple, these are wonderful little microphones.

I do have a problem with the little clip that comes with them - that you clip onto the person speaking. These little clips break easily. Because of that, I recommend that you pick up the after market B&H Photo Video clip for the SM93 as it is built tough!

I have never had a problem with these microphones, and I have used them for a good number of years.
