5.0 out of 5 stars Onyx... only hardcore rappers left
In a time (1998) when rap was ALL commercial and about money and cars, Onyx kept it real even though many critics said that Onyx was getting tired and their sound was getting old. The Rolling Stones have sounded virtually the same for 50 years and no one complained, why should Onyx change their sound? I guess these 40 year old reviewers from Chicago shouldn't be...

3.0 out of 5 stars This is where they started to fall off bigtime!
As far as i see it, there best work was "All we got is us". After that, they started sliding down ever since and it started with this album. While Shut'em down Remix, The Worst, and Raze it up were the best songs on the CD, while the others either sounded like they was trying too hard to bring back the style they showed on the second album or they came off soft on other...

In a time (1998) when rap was ALL commercial and about money and cars, Onyx kept it real even though many critics said that Onyx was getting tired and their sound was getting old. The Rolling Stones have sounded virtually the same for 50 years and no one complained, why should Onyx change their sound? I guess these 40 year old reviewers from Chicago shouldn't be reviewing rap albums, because Shut Em Down was in a class all it's own in 1998. Still bumped heavily by me till today it showed Onyx doesn't care about what's making money or what's cool, they care about the meaning of the name "Onyx". A hardcore hip hop group.

5.0 out of 5 stars One word.....WOW, August 7, 2000
This review is from: Shut Em Down (Audio CD)
When I bought this CD is picked it up w/ some extra money I had on a gift certificate for my birthday. Damn...I must say that it was the best blind investment of my life. Sure I had heard Onyx before and liked them but never got really into their music or bought one of their CD's. As soon as I listened to this I was blown away. It is just amazing....they lyrics, the beats the whole attitude and feel of the album. This is without a doubt the best rap album of '98 and one of the decades best. Despite no mainstream attention of any kind, this is ablum is easily one of my Top 5 for all time and you need to buy it.

This LP is no joke. I must have pumped this CD twenty times in my I30. Dispite the violence on some of the tracks this album is a STAR kid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reminds of the "old" Wu-Tang - Really Innovative, March 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Shut Em Down (Audio CD)
Well, the first time I listened the CD, I felt like the first time I was listening "Wu-tang 36 Chambers." Really good, really innovative stuff. While most of the rappers, especially the Wu-tang, who think they are still underground are actually becoming commercialized (not to offend anyone), ONYX reminds of the old, harsh, real underground rap. Thanks, guys!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best of 98, April 6, 2001
By
This review is from: Shut Em Down (Audio CD)
Shut Em Down was easily one of the best rap albums of 1998. To be honest, I had not really listened to Onyx very much until I heard some of the songs on a sampler. After that, I had to pick up the album. It was everything I expected and more. Some of the songs like React, F**k Dat, and The Worst should be hardcore classics. There are not any bad songs on the entire album, but Raze It Up, Broke Willies, Rob and Vic, Ghetto Starz, Take That, and Shut Em Down Remix stood out along with the three previously mentioned. Overshine, the hidden track after The Worst, is also a good song. One of the things that make this album great is the excellent production and guest spots. Production is done by Keith Horne, Onyx, DJ Scratch, Self, Budda, and Lateif. Guest spots are made by Raekwon, Method Man, Killa Sin, X-1, Lost Boyz, Greg Valentine, J-Mega, DMX, Noreaga, Big Pun, Bonifucco, 50 Cent, and Sunshine. Overall, a classic hardcore album with good lyrics, rhyming, beats, production, and guests.
