5.0 out of 5 stars Definition of Heavy
I don't know what happened to these guys between their first album, 'Jump Start,' and this one, but whatever it was, it made them angry. 'Shut Your Breath' hits hard from the first track to the last. In terms of originality and quality, I'll say this: I don't compare 'Shut Your Breath' to anything, I compare other things to 'Shut Your Breath.' This should be the gold...

2.0 out of 5 stars middle ground
Wow, looking through these reviews it appears people either absolutely hate this album or they seem to love it. I don't see much of a middle ground. I have to say, it sure seems like there are a lot more negative than positive and the total # of stars doesn't seem to reflect that. I do take the middle ground. A lot of what has been said is superfluous, who cares what the...

In terms of originality and quality, I'll say this: I don't compare 'Shut Your Breath' to anything, I compare other things to 'Shut Your Breath.' This should be the gold standard for heavy metal. I'm not going to break down every song, but I'll say that I thoroughly enjoy every track.

This band is no longer performing. They replaced their drummer and started a new project called Key To Arson which eventually died out. As far as I know, there are no current projects involving any of the members of Simon Says.

5.0 out of 5 stars Title, January 29, 2006
This review is from: Shut Your Breath (Audio CD)
Jan 29, 2006 - So you're still listening to Rock Radio and expecting to hear something good? Compared to Avenged Sevenfold, System of a Down, Korn, Disturbed, or any other horrid metal band, these guys shred the competition. Picture a blend of the Deftones (back when they screamed alot) and an anonymous grunge band and you've got Simon Says. In a world where everything seems to be turned upside down, these guys are overshadowed by bands that are completely vacant of any musical talent.
Aug 28, 2006 - I was watching BeerFest in theatres the other day and heard track 1 (Hey You) on there...excellent choice and a pleasant surprise hearing GOOD music in movies these days...check it out and watch Beerfest.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST CD EVER!!!!, September 27, 2005
This review is from: Shut Your Breath (Audio CD)
Matt Frank kicks @$$ vocally here with my all time fovorite CD ever released! I can listen to this CD over and over and over and never get bored. It's got every element needed to make the most amazing metal album ever. From crushing chords and sadistic lyrics to harrowing vocals and catchy chorus lines, this CD will have you SCREAMING your @$$ off!

Hey You - Freakign amazing! When I bought this CD after a friend told me that they were too heavy for him and he felt they were satanistic (you have to understand...he's a prude) the guy at the counter said they were very much like the Deftones and I thought, thats cool, I dig Chino and the boys, but this CD blows Deftones out of the freaking water! Just listen to this opener which gets you ready for a verbal onslaut!

Syphon - One of my favorite songs ever! Matt has the creepiest voice ever...he'd scare Marylin Manson.

Canvas - A great song about double crossing freinds...I felt this way plenty a time.

Silk Moth (Mr. Double Face) - More double crossment...The lyrics on this entire album are some of the most mature thoughts in music today and it's truly an art to see how Matt spins the web of his mind.

Segue - One of the most beautiful melodies ever..instumental but one of the best out there

Blister (Nothing) - this is the single and an amazing choice it was...Great song, and it shows what this band is made of.

Dead Weight - I love the feel of this song, is it acoustic is it electric...it just works all the way around

Limousines & Penthouse Suites (Break Me Down) - This song is about the pop trach that floods the radio waves today...pretty much Matt hates Brintey Spears and Justin Timberlake!

Dyslexic Smile - Great song!

Tourniquet - I love this song, like 'Dead Weight' to me, it just works so well

Train Wreck - This song is good, but it's not my favorite, it just doesn't fit with the flow of the rest of the album

El Ess - This is the best closing song ever penned...the music is just beautiful yet forcfull and brutal...the lyrics are engrossing and enchanting and you'll be spellbound...just listen to this sick twisted love song that will make your mouth water for another track, just one more track to keep your high going

All and all this is the BEST CD that I own, and I own quit a few. If you own and or have heard 'Jump Start' and because of that wasted effort do not own this CD please buy this CD RIGHT NOW...Simon Says are the prime example of evolution on the music front, they went form Creed to Spineshank in brutality with heartfelt lyrics and eerie gutar work and Matt's voice that fits this CD like a glove!

What the hell is up with those previouse reviews?! first off their not a boy band...far from! and as for them being signed by a major label that has Disney in it...so what?! they got a 3 million deal contract in 98/99, they got the deal cause Simon Says is off the hook! they've toured with such bands as Limp Bizkit and Filter...ect. Man theve been rippin' out great music since 94. this new cd is great! If you like filter and Faith No more, then you'll love this band. this cd has great guitar riffs and amazing vocals. this cd is a must have, so go ahead and get it, you won't regret it. And to that person who said that simon says has no talent, whats your thought on talent... LFO? grow up.

simon says debut,"jump start",was a jumbled slab of poppy rock.so then out came "shut your breath" and i decided to check it out."hey you" and "syphon" made me hit the floor-i couldnt believe this was the same band.the singer was screaming his behind off and the guitars were ripping thru the amps like nothing before.the standout track on here is "dead weight".man that song is ill.for as long as it is,not one second is worth skipping.very amazing second and third choruses.anyways, its too bad this band split and didnt move some more albums.this one was good stuff.for fans of deftones, relative ash,and taproot.

I thought "Jump Start" sucked. No offense to anyone who dug it, but I thought that album was just a piece of derivative drivel. On my buddy's recommendation, I checked out this album, "Shut Your Breath."

Wow.

Yes, I'd probably classify them as slightly nu-metal. However, these guys really smack you around aurally. They're heavy, focused, and vicious. I can't honestly point to a bad song on the entire album. My favorites are probably Silk Moth and Dead Weight - this track is an absolute killer. From moody to powerful, it just blows me away every time I hear it.

I hate crappy music, but this is a burst of talent. It's too bad they broke up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very under rated band, July 20, 2004

I bought this cd a week after it came out and It is still in regular rotation in my collection. I think it's the best of the two Simon Says cds. The first was much softer. The riffing on this cd isn't flashing by any means but it certainly does get you head slammin. Like many of the reviews before me have stated this is not the most original of sounds. You can hear some deftones and filter in it but still rocks. They changed their name to Key to Arson... or so I've been told. I'm not sure if the whole band changed their name or if they got rid of some people or what but Key to Arson sounds more like the Jump Start album than this one. This is the cd to have though. Very good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Jumpstart, March 10, 2002

This review is from: Shut Your Breath (Audio CD)
It's unfortunate how a lot of today's bands kind of go by the same formula when it applies to their music, and eventually everyone gets tired of it. Not so with Simon Says, and while I loved them even on Jumpstart, I'm glad that they dropped their pretty boy image and just decided to go all out on this cd. Obviously people from Scarborough don't know good music when they hear it, otherwise they would've never given this cd a bad review to begin with. That also includes the rest of the morons who gave this cd a bad rating. Unlike Jumpstart no songs on this cd sound the same at all, and every song is a headbanger's dream. My personal favorites on this cd are "Blister" "Hey You" and "Dead Weight". I suggest you go out and buy this cd whenever you can, otherwise you will regret not getting it.

I have to say, it sure seems like there are a lot more negative than positive and the total # of stars doesn't seem to reflect that. I do take the middle ground. A lot of what has been said is superfluous, who cares what the band looks like or if they are signed w/ a major label. We should just judge them by their music. That being said, I do see that this band is, while not a straight rip-off of, highly influenced by the Deftones. Unfortunately, it is to their detriment because Simon Says is talented and one can't help but imagine they could bring something more interesting to the party so to speak. Still, for what they do (which is not really earth shaking) they are pretty good. If you like the Deftones and can't wait for their next album, this one ought to hold you over.

I am a huge fan of this band.Don't let the nay sayers bring you down, these guys rule. They don't follow everyone else they have found there own way of doing things. To me they are a better version of Filter.Don't get me wrong I like Filter but they are better. His voice is amazing.I love the way he sings on every track. The guitar riffs are heavy but still original. These guys definitly get a five.THEY RULE!...
