Listening to this CD and Reach the Beach... "makes me sad" these kids today call Hip-Hop, music.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fine 80's Band, November 17, 2003
This review is from: Shuttered Room (Audio CD)
The Fixx are one of the best bands that came out of the MTV-80's. These guys have great pop-rock songs with catchy guitar hooks, cool keyboards, and a very charismatic frontman in the form of Cy Curnin. And, very thankfully, the Fixx are still recording & touring to this day, with four of the original five band members firmly intact (only their bassist keeps changing). Their first album, 1982's "Shuttered Room," is a strong debut disc, featuring a pair of instant Fixx classics, "Stand Or Fall" and "Red Skies," but also contains other memorable rockers, like "Lost Planes," "Cameras In Paris," "I Live," and "The Fool," as well as the fun bonus track, "Sinking Island." This is a band that knows how to make intelligent keyboard-laden rock, and Cy Curnin's voice is very commanding. The Fixx would hit the commercial jackpot with their classic second album, "Reach The Beach," but "Shuttered Room" is an excellent beginning for this fine British band.

4.0 out of 5 stars No particular comments about the new CD, November 4, 2003

I can't really hear any difference, but my ears were shot long ago, and my equipment is pedestrian at best. The additional song is OK, but I'll leave it up to Fixx fans whether to buy this a second time.

In the meantime, since the reviews didn't carry over, something needs to be said about the band and the album (or tape, we're talking a long time ago). The Fixx is one of the most talented bands out there playing this long together. Every one of their releases is chock full of outstanding songs, right up to the present day. They got their reputation as a 1980's modern rock/dance funk band, and that's unfortunate, because their best music is quite different from that.

This was the first, and while there are a few songs that are best left in the dust (particularly the first two), several others are classic, especially of course "Stand or Fall" and "Red Skies at Night", which should be familiar to anyone with twenty year-old radio ears. But my favorite songs here are "I Live" and "Cameras in Paris", which display what would be become Fixx trademarks, clever, entertaining lyrics and challenging song structures that require time to appreciate.

While not their best, Fixx maintained a high level of quality throughout all their works, and this is no exception. This belongs in anyone's collection, and while the same could be said of any Fixx CD, that fact simply illustrates the how impressive their discography truly is.
