Listening to this CD and Reach the Beach... "makes me sad" these kids today call Hip-Hop, music.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fine 80's Band, November 17, 2003
This review is from: Shuttered Room (Audio CD)
The Fixx are one of the best bands that came out of the MTV-80's. These guys have great pop-rock songs with catchy guitar hooks, cool keyboards, and a very charismatic frontman in the form of Cy Curnin. And, very thankfully, the Fixx are still recording & touring to this day, with four of the original five band members firmly intact (only their bassist keeps changing). Their first album, 1982's "Shuttered Room," is a strong debut disc, featuring a pair of instant Fixx classics, "Stand Or Fall" and "Red Skies," but also contains other memorable rockers, like "Lost Planes," "Cameras In Paris," "I Live," and "The Fool," as well as the fun bonus track, "Sinking Island." This is a band that knows how to make intelligent keyboard-laden rock, and Cy Curnin's voice is very commanding. The Fixx would hit the commercial jackpot with their classic second album, "Reach The Beach," but "Shuttered Room" is an excellent beginning for this fine British band.

4.0 out of 5 stars No particular comments about the new CD, November 4, 2003

I can't really hear any difference, but my ears were shot long ago, and my equipment is pedestrian at best. The additional song is OK, but I'll leave it up to Fixx fans whether to buy this a second time.

In the meantime, since the reviews didn't carry over, something needs to be said about the band and the album (or tape, we're talking a long time ago). The Fixx is one of the most talented bands out there playing this long together. Every one of their releases is chock full of outstanding songs, right up to the present day. They got their reputation as a 1980's modern rock/dance funk band, and that's unfortunate, because their best music is quite different from that.

This was the first, and while there are a few songs that are best left in the dust (particularly the first two), several others are classic, especially of course "Stand or Fall" and "Red Skies at Night", which should be familiar to anyone with twenty year-old radio ears. But my favorite songs here are "I Live" and "Cameras in Paris", which display what would be become Fixx trademarks, clever, entertaining lyrics and challenging song structures that require time to appreciate.

While not their best, Fixx maintained a high level of quality throughout all their works, and this is no exception. This belongs in anyone's collection, and while the same could be said of any Fixx CD, that fact simply illustrates the how impressive their discography truly is.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fixx's debut, the best in my opinion, April 12, 2008
This review is from: Shuttered Room (Audio CD)
I know that Reach the Beach is The Fixx's top album. But, Shuttered Room I think is even better, it seems only 2 tracks are really lagging but all of the rest, man just great music and lyrics. My favs are Lost Planes, Cameras in Paris and The Strain. And of course Stand or Fall. If you are a casual Fixx fan, I would recommend picking up this title. You won't be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut!!!, March 27, 2008

This was an excellent debut album from an 80's alternative/new wave band. Some of their best tracks can be found among hits that made it to their numerous 'best of' compilations. My non-hit favorites include The Strain, Cameras In Paris and Lost Planes. I like them just as much as Red Skies & Stand or Fall.

Also, they seemed to be everywhere in the early to mid-80's... I think I ended up seeing them 5 times or so and didn't even know who they were the first time and was blown away. They opened for The Flock of Seagulls (LOL - way better than the feature act) and The Police (Synchronicity tour).

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fixx-Shuttered Room-CD, June 18, 2007
This review is from: Shuttered Room (Audio CD)
In my opinion this is the best of The Fixx. Red skies (at night), Stand or fall, Shuttered room are some of their best and my personal favorites. Brings back the 80's I'm sort of fond of. If you like the groups, Fock of Seagulls (I Ran), Icehouse, The Cure, Depeche Mode, INXS, etc. You will probably really like this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, January 20, 2009

The Fixx's music has been a part of my life since 1982 when I first heard "Saved By Zero" on the radio. How I missed "One Thing Leads to Another" is anyone's guess, since that was their biggest hit. I went out and bought their album "Reach the Beach," which is fantastic. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I went out and found this earlier release (1981), which was also The Fixx's first album.

I played my 33 1/3 rpm record "Shuttered Room" over and over, and in some ways, it represents my high school years. Listening to it now takes me right back, and all the songs are classic Fixx.

If you already have "Reach the Beach" and are interested in expanding your Fixx collection, I whole-heartedly recommend "Shuttered Room." Unlike some other (great) groups, The Fixx didn't seem to need an album or two to "find their sound." They found it right away, and this album shows it well. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC, February 11, 2006
This review is from: Shuttered Room (Audio CD)
A classic album.Though rock became more commerical, the FIXX offered this album(CD) in the early 80's and was a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of stuff released at the time(and still is).It is a landmark in rock history. You know a few of the songs from radio airplay but the entire cd is fantastic.A must have for any collection regardless of your age.Why this band isn't at superstar status is beyond me,but that's another story.
