Classic Fixx, September 21, 2011

The Fixx was a fixture of 80's alternative rock radio for good reason. They had talent. If you like the genre and you have some experience with the Fixx, get this CD. You cannot own "Stand or Fall" or "Red Skies" by going to iTunes. You have to buy this CD. And it's worth it just for these two songs alone. Like much of the good music from the late 60's through the 80's it's hard to believe these tracks were recorded before the existence of DAW's and autotune etc. In this CD, vestigial synthesizers somehow co-feature with guitars having simple but effective effects. There is no crunch here. There was no need. The melodies and rhythm can carry the songs. "Some people," "Cameras in Paris", and "the Fool," never made the airwaves. But they each leave a different footprint on your brain--different vibes, tempos-- catchy tunes, and all very much the Fixx. There is some filler material here. But not much. And the CD is not as good as the 5 star Reach the Beach CD -- when the Fixx were at the height of their powers. But Shuttered Room is a must have if you like anything else done by the Fixx.
