From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3-Greg is so shy that he hates anything red since it reminds him of the agony of blushing. When his parents let him get a goldfish, he surprises himself by choosing a red one, which he names Shy Guy. At first, silence prevails between the boy and his pet, but once the first words (Greg's) and bubbles (Shy Guy's) are expressed, the two are inseparable. Greg takes his friend on a tour of his room and house, and then ventures outside with him. Kids at the playground and at school take a shine to the fish, and Greg discovers that he has something worth talking about, overcoming his bashfulness to become confident and popular. Pef uses darker colors for the child's shy days and depicts large, toothy adults looming over him. By the end of the story, a happy Greg, fishbowl under his arm, is leading the crowd across a brightly colored spread. Humorous endpapers extend the story line. This title is well suited for collections needing additional books on self-esteem.
