Well, maybe . . .,

I listened to this album because Alex Ross said good things about it in a review in the May 8th 2010 New Yorker. Well, maybe. Ross says he's listened to the album a lot in his off-hours. I can see that if you're in the habit of listening while you do something else; doing the dishes, translating Italian, that kind of thing. In that context the hour-long suite of two-piano duets seems kind of cool. Like hearing someone noodling on the other side of your loft wall. But I don't hear anything much beyond noodling. Hey, noodling's fine. But I'm pretty sure I couldn't get through this album with the assistance of liquid Dove and a Tuffie to keep me focused. Andres must be a hell of a personality as a performer in person to earn the kind of early kudos he's gotten; on disc . . . well, it's noodling. Very classy noodling.

Enfant terrible, the Andres sound has arrived,

I agree with New Yorker reviewer, Alex Ross. Andres has a voice and a musical vocabulary that is remarkably mature and articulate. The music is disarmingly sweet, almost innocent, but it's fortified by a complexity and fierceness that catches the listener by surprise; the kind of remarkably sudden changes that draw the listener's attention and keep an audience rapt. Nothing is trite or boring, and much of the music is lyrical and beautiful.
The performance on this premier recording is also remarkable. I've never heard two pianos produce such a rich variety of sounds, much of it achieved through the technical bravado and remarkable synchronicity of the two pianists, Andres and Kaplan. I find myself wanting to listen over and over, sometimes to individual pieces and other times to the entire hour of the full ten pieces. And i find myself humming parts to myself and even out loud at odd moments. I want more of that Andres sound!

Having listened a dozen times, I have found depth and variety through most of the pieces. No question -- Andres is a talent. Just give a listen to his interpretation of Mozart: [...]
