Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Carducci (Shyness: A Bold New Approach), a director of the Shyness Research Institute in New Albany, Ind., has been studying shyness for 20 years. Here he focuses on shy children and how parents can help, maintaining that it's vital to learn how to address and manage shyness early on so that the shy child doesn't miss out on valuable experiences now and later in life. Exploring nature vs. nurture theories, Carducci concludes that although shyness has a biological basis, the trait is also influenced by parents, childhood relationships and an individual's feelings about him- or herself. Importantly, Carducci stresses that parents can help a shy child learn to live "successfully" with his natural temperament. Offering concrete strategies, Carducci guides parents through such essential topics as building social skills, making friends, mastering play skills, finding the right school and learning to confront academic and peer issues. A chapter on teens and the unique demands placed upon the shy adolescent is also included, with helpful suggestions on subjects ranging from how to deal with slumber parties to coping with shy kids who retreat from social situations into computers. Parents of shy youngsters will appreciate Carducci's compassionate tone and his underlying message that shyness is a natural, manageable trait that requires patience and understanding rather than a flaw that needs a quick remedy.

Review

"This wonderful book offers a readable, easily followed plan for helping children, as well as adults, win over the challenges that shyness poses for them. Dr. Carducci brings years of experience successfully working with shy youngsters to this set of new advice on transforming shyness into sociability."--Philip G. Zimbardo, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Stanford University and author of The Shy Child: A Parent's Guide to Preventing and Overcoming Shyness from Infancy to Adulthood

"Dr. Carducci is an internationally recognized expert on the psychology of shyness. His new book provides a well-organized, easy to use, and tremendously helpful Shyness Breakthrough Plan that will help parents guide a shy child or adolescent toward success."--Jonathan M. Cheek, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Wellesley College and author of Conquering Shyness

"Dr. Carducci always surprises me with his creative thinking and compassion. I am impressed by how well he listens to the voices of the shy and extracts so much meaning from them. All in all, this is a book of wise optimism that can help children break out of the prison that shyness can sometimes be for them."--Hara Estroff Marano, editor-at-large for Psychology Today magazine

"The Shyness Breakthrough provides an easy-to-follow plan to help children of any age 'warm up' in shy situations and develop the interpersonal skills needed for social confidence. I highly recommend this plan for becoming 'successfully shy' for any shy person or the people who love them."--Diane F. Halpern, Ph.D., president-elect of the American Psychological Association and director of the Berger Institute for Work, Family, and Children and professor of psychology at Claremont McKenna College

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for Parents of Shy Children, November 3, 2004
This review is from: The Shyness Breakthrough (Paperback)
I can't thank Dr. Carducci enough for writing this book. Dr. Carducci addresses the issue of childhood shyness with not only an excellent explanation of what shyness is but he also provides practical tips on how parents can help their shy child become "successfully shy". Dr. Carducci uses short stories to illustrate the obstacles a shy child encounters and integrates his tips to show how to better address the situation. My 4 year old daughter is a typical "slow to warm up" child and by implementing Dr. Carducci's suggestions my daughter now more easily adjusts to new situations, new people and new activities. This is a must read for parents of a shy child.
