Book Description

The eighth century scholar Sibawayhi was the first grammarian of Arabic. Carter discusses his origins and background, his relationship with his teachers, the intellectual context of his grammatical ideas, and how his general concept of language shaped his approach to Arabic. Sibawayhi's monumental work--known simply as "the Book"--embodies a universality that is still being uncovered. So thorough is the work that it remains to this day the great authority on classical Arabic. This biography provides a superb introduction to the subject of Arabic linguistics and to the life and times of its founder.

4.0 out of 5 stars Insight into the Imam of Arabic Grammar, February 12, 2008
This review is from: Sibawayhi (Makers of Islamic Civilization) (Paperback)
The Author has done a good job of bringing to light the life of one of the earliest grammarians of Arabic Language. Overall, the book is a good read, although a reader who does not have some background in Arabic Grammar will feel lost after the first few terms. This book is also a very good primer for anyone who wants to delve into the intricacies of Sibawayhi's Al-Kitab since the author has very diligently described various chapters/parts of Al-Kitab and how the work helped in the growth of a nascent Arabic grammar.
All in all, a work well done.
