Those wanting a more or less complete set of Sibelius tone poems do not have too many options. There's a 3 cd-box on DG with Neeme Järvi and the Gothenburgers, decent and polished, but unfortunately consistently inferior to the earlier, splendid BIS recordings by the same combination (scattered across numerous single cd's).There's a 2 cd Alexander Gibson set on Chandos, highly recommendable, but with a rushed Tapiola and no Lemminkainen Suite. There are fine single discs with selected tone poems by Ashkenazy (Decca), Levi on Telarc and first class options on Naxos by Inkinen and Sakari, respectively.

So what about this slightly obscure-looking superbudget set on Brilliant Classics - is it the promising alternative it might appear to be? Well yes and...yes! This is a differently sounding Sibelius than all above listed - I guess the word is 'Russian'. There is little or no orchestral polish here, but plenty of excitement, commitment, colour. Having listened to Sibelius for decades in more versions than I care to remember, I actually heard some works here with a fresh sense of discovery. The orchestral playing may take a little while to adjust to, and the recording benefits from a solid cranking up of both bass and volume. But having gotten so far, it is just to sit back and enjoy. There are no decidedly weak tracks here, and quite a few that rival the finest in terms of sheer power and excitement - I was impressed by Tapiola, The Oceanides, Pohjola's Daughter, and the Lemminkainen Suite too receives an inspired reading. While hardly a first choice in any single work, as a box set this is as recommendable as any competition in this repertoire - and at the price there is little to worry about. Any serious Sibelian should give this a listen.

There's really no way you can lose with this disc: so much value, variety, and great orchestral playing. Are there slightly better versions of individual pieces? Certainly. Sibelius is well-traveled territory for many conductors, namely Karajan, Bernstein, Jarvi, Berglund, Askhenazy, Vanska, Sakari, etc. However, few of these conductors record the complete poems, and most neglect some of the best of the lesser-known works, such as the Oceanides, The Bard, and the evergreen Spring Song. Enter Sinaysky, a well-known Russian conductor, whose recordings of Balakirev, Liadov, and Schmidt have won rave reviews for Chandos and Naxos respectively. He knows this repertoire quite well and plays the pieces with fire and sensitivity. At $6.99 for a download, you're getting a tremendous bargain, and even if you prefer, say, Vanska's Tapiola or Askhenazy's En Saga, you're still gaining a Spring Song, a Dryad, or a Night Ride and Sunrise.

Here are my own impressions of the various pieces: the sublime Lemminkainen Suite is one of the best versions I've heard, particularly the famous 'Swan of Tuonela' movement and the third movement, 'Lemminkainen in Tuonela.' Compare it to Vanska's version, which is more eccentric with very slow speeds and hushed passages (which I enjoy, but sometimes you long for a more red-blooded Romantic account). Finlandia, The Dryad, En Saga, and Pohjola's Daughter are in line with the best--though I must admit I've never really heard a poor version of any of these. He brings out the orchestra solos beautifully in En Saga, however, and the great climax of Pohjola's Daughter is quite powerful (compare to Sakari's, which is a much tamer affair).

I was pleasantly surprised by just how good the performances are. They "feel" like Sibelius, something I wasn't so sure would be the case given the antipathy between Finland and Russia. The price was certainly right, making for a cheap way to fill a hole in my collection.

Years ago Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Moscow Radio Symphony made a symphony cycle that was truly awful.

This is a good budget set, playing is tight and spirited. I do notice the trombonist slipping here and there but even he does a fne job in Tapiola, for example. But Maria Jogeva does a fine job of singing Luonnotar in Finnish.

Recorded sound is fine, a bit of a spread out stereo. At times it does seem a little bit odd (echo?) but I am no hifi specialist so I can't even put the sound into words. I really enjoy Nightride and Sunshine as it was mixed. The Lemminkäinen suite is pretty good too.

Enjoy most of it, it really has no awful parts. Naxos series always seem to stumble on one disc and the rest is fine.

I have several fine sets of all of these works, so I can't give it a four. but a good 3.5. The first disc will get the most play, plus Tapiola. I may rate it higher later but only time will tell.
