Gr. 3-5. Big ones, small ones, frisky ones, and quiet ones. Books in the continuing Dogs series introduce different types of dogs, from the popular golden retriever to the lesser-known shih tzu. Each volume begins with a one-page general introduction to dogs that eases the reader into information about the specific breed discussed. Following this is a closer look at the breed's characteristics: Siberian huskies, for example, have two different coats; Jack Russell terriers stand "between 12 and 14 inches at the shoulders." Photographs of dogs playing, eating, and working accompany comments on their temperament, care, and needs. A discussion of puppies rounds out the text, making the book a good introduction for a child considering a particular breed for a pet. The writing is simple and the photographs appealing enough to attract reluctant readers. A good selection for early book reports or research projects. Other books are listed in the Series Roundup in this issue. Glossary and Internet sites appended. Heather Hepler
