First full-length debut is almost as good as a live show,

This review is from: Sick of Sarah (Audio CD)
The music has a '90s influence that calls to mind Letters to Cleo and early No Doubt as well as the lesser known ska band Save Ferris and girl rock group Go Betty Go. Sick of Sarah creates interesting, multilayered pop/rock songs with the help of 3 guitars and lead singer Abisha Uhl's slick lyrics, sweet voice, and sexy, high energy stage presence.
I had seen the band live twice before this CD was released, and while I'm glad to finally have a hard copy in my hands I have to admit that I prefer their live shows. The songs are catchy and make you want to sing along, but in my opinion this CD has been overproduced. Most of the tracks are great, upbeat, girl-rock anthems like "Bittersweet," "Not Listening," "Hardest Part," and "Breakdown." A couple of softer tracks, "Give Me A Reason" and "Common Mistake" are a welcome alternative to their harder rock anthems. It brings to mind the softer side of a band like Tegan & Sara. The biggest mistake on this album comes with the selection of Track 5 - the ballad "Fall." This comes across as a bad acoustic or open-mic set at a local coffeehouse. This does not sound like the polished, fun-loving punk-pop band you hear at the concerts. It consistently gets skipped in my rotation. If the band wants to add more ballads it should stick to the sound of "Paint Like That" another new song on this release. The other blemish on this CD is the overworked "Mr. Incredible." This is one of my favorite songs to hear live and it has a wicked guitar solo at the end -- that has been completely overshadowed on this recording by unnecessary and repetitive vocals layered over the guitar riff. That was so disappointing to hear and has ruined this version of the song for me. It too often gets skipped on my player. Thankfully, you can get a older digital version of "Mr. Incredible" from the bands' Los Angeles 2006 [Explicit]. You can find a version of "Common Mistake" on that recording as well, but the newer version is better. On the Bittersweet you can find recordings of "Bittersweet" and "Paint Like That." "Daisies" is the band's newest single and it hits the mark showcasing the bands catchy pop sound and interesting lyrics. Its video is in rotation on some music channels. I highly recommend this CD and a live show if you can catch one in your area. This is a great album for fans of female rock bands.

Great new band, rockin' debut album,

These girls know how to rock. They are poppy enough to be catchy with enough of an edge not to be just another pop act.
This album is a balance of upbeat fun tunes, like Daisies and Bittersweet, heavier songs such as Not Listening, Mr. Incredible, and Breakdown (<--my personal fave), and sweet ballads, Fall and Paint Like That, that might have you tearing up just a bit on the inside. Keep in mind its their debut album so the production is a wee bit on the weak side, but I'm SURE the best is yet to come. Don't miss the next big thing! Check them out [...] for tour dates and news.

These girls are great. I stumbled across them on AfterEllen.com and decided to give a listen. I really like them. There's not many cds I can listen to from begining to end and like every song, but, this is one of them.
