4.0 out of 5 stars Not your grandparent's Oldsmobile, August 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sick (Audio CD)
This album isn't your standard fare-- music ranging from minimalist techno to jazz-inflected trip hop to orchestral industrial rock laid down as a backdrop to Anna Wildsmith's interesting multilingual spoken word/sung bits. Musical contributors include Euphonic, Raymond Watts of Pig (who recycles one of his instrumental tracks off Pig's "Wrecked" as accompaniment to Wildsmith's voice), sundry members of KMFDM, and more. The musical quality isn't consistent-- it goes from really interesting to not that interesting; and alas Wildsmith's voice (the missing link between Elastica's Justine Frischman and PJ Harvey) can grate at times. However, this album is unlike anything you've heard (unless you have the first Sow album, a more consistent but less gripping effort) and that's probably recommendation enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A genuinely novel and artistic album, December 12, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sick (Audio CD)
I came across this through shopping for Raymond Watts' music, as I am a fan of industrial music, and decided this CD would be worth checking out. I am a spoken-word/experimental music enthusiast, and so what I thought would be a good industrial/trip hop mix turns out to be the kind of album I've been looking to get into for years.

The music is less industrial and more trip hop/electronica inspired, as all the music comes from numerous different artists; the three Raymond Watts/Pig tracks are by far the most inulgent in the industrial sound.

The production is repetitive yet flows gracefully and doesn't bore; heavy, but not too messy (except for K-Casino, which is too long to continue carrying the frantic attitude it attempts to retain throughout). The vocals are incredible; Anna Wildsmith/Sow is a great spoken word artist, and her lyrics have a gothic but sexy flavor, littered with tidings of severe emotions. Some of the tracks are spoken in French, which adds yet another strong element.

All around this CD is for those unafraid to seek more from music than just catchy riffs and guitars. To me, this CD emphasizes what music is really about: doing what you please without rules or fears of what you create. I consider myself a musician and spoken-word artist, and I personally just really connect with this CD; I've been playing it non-stop for about a week now, and it doesn't bore one slight iota (though I still don't care much for K-Casino, but that's just me).

4.0 out of 5 stars ***RIDE THE ANCHOVY***, November 22, 2003

Anna is soooo talented and this is a great cd! Every song is a winner, some may take longer to grow on ya then others but they will, even if you dont speak three languages! And how do yo go wrong with lyrics like: "Lunatic dolphins orbiting enflamed planets, an octopus pulsating with pure cosmic kicks"... Snatch it up if your lucky enough to find it or Je M'aime in the used bin in your favorite Music Werks ooops I mean record shop. I sure hope we dont have to wait for some PIG to break her heart again afore she blesses us w/another gem. No offense Ray.
