5.0 out of 5 stars Love this classic August 5, 2011

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I've wanted this game for a while now, and when I saw it was around ten bucks... I had to get it. I received it within seven days, which was the shipping method chosen. Then the fun began, or so I had hoped. My computer runs Microsoft Windows 7 home premium and two nvidea 480s with a nvidea 260 for physx. I installed the game and expansion without a problem. When I tried to run the program, it would take forever to do anything and would finally crash. The conclusion that I derived was that my computer and software was too advanced for this game. I'm not sure if its a directx problem, or on particular setting not agreeing with the program. DON'T LOSE HOPE. If your like me... and have tried to find a solution online to no avail. The trick is to go into nvidea's control panel and choose the "manage 3d settings" option on the left. Then select the "program settings" tab, do NOT choose "global settings", because you don't want your entire system to look and feel like you went back to widows 95. You may need to "add" the progam, for the expansion it is named "terranx.exe", but for the original program it is named "terran.exe". Then you modify all the settings to their lowest value. Always gear the program toward performance and make sure fancy vsync is disabled. After making changes to these settings, the program works without a hitch... its still a little on the slow side when it comes to loading, but then again... it always has been. I recommend it completely. Especially if you've never played the expansion for Alpha Centauri, Alien Crossfire... it adds new flavor and difficulty to the game, its like learning it all over again. One final note... shipping costs were rather high, as always. I purchased two copies of the game and it ended up costing less than the shipping charges. Read more ›

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Even with very dated graphics it is one of the best games ever. The last time I played it was many years ago and when I played it now it was still very enjoyable. However when I tried to install Alien Crossfire it glitched up the first game. Does ACAC overwrite it so you play AC as a option game? Who knows there was very little installation advice. I have a Win 7 Ultimate.

3.0 out of 5 stars It has it pros and cons June 3, 2013

I only play civ 4 & 5, so those are the only two games that I can relate it to in the series.
-All the units are customizable which is very nice since you create a unit that you want instead of picking a pre-make one.
-The diplomatic in the game is more realistic than both civ 4 & 5
-It cool to see futurist civ game
The user interface is the most unfriendly one I see in games. You have to right click to see all the actions you can do unlike civ 4 & 5 where you have icons that you pick to do the actions.
-The in game tutorial doesn't explain the game very well and is very vague. Plus the game physical copy doesn't come with a manuals, so I don't even know how to play the game correctly and their no you-tube video of a person explain the game. It would be helpful if someone post a website that give a full tutorial of the game in the comments.
-The unit support is broken to me. If you want to support units you have to use minerals(production) instead of energy(money) in other civ games. So the more units you have the less production you have. So the amount of units a base support make your base less productive, so you build slower.
-The graphic are bad. I know that isn't a fair cons since the game is old however I have to look carefully if I build a farm or a mine in the square.

So anyway that my two cents. I would suggest to look up a youtube video of someone playing it before you buy it. Also I didn't had any problems install the game and I run window 8.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Complete Review December 17, 2012
Verified Purchase
A remastered work of an old classic which still stands up with all the great 4X strategy games of today. I only installed the expansion because I already had AC installed. I had no problem with the installation and playing the game on my Dell 4600 computer with windows XP. No problem receiving the product from the seller way before the anticipated delivery date. A must buy for anyone interested in 4X strategy games.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't work. April 15, 2013

UPDATE: (second review)

I did buy this game again, and did try to play it again. And it didn't work again.

The facts: the Firaxis website is still operational, with their newest "Civ" games being heavily promoted. But Alpha Centauri is nowhere to be found, nor did I find it mentioned. And no Alpha Centauri forums, and no Alpha Centauri patches.

This newest CD I bought already had the supposed patch included in it (but you'll find this same patch available on several amateur websites, for free, and usually dating back to 2009). You'll also find amateur forums which extoll said patch's ability to fix the problems Alpha Centauri has when operating on XP. But you'll also find comments from people who have said that the patch doesn't (always) work.

That's where you get into "garage programmer" areas. Posters who insist that fixing said problems are as easy as opening up a file, and changing a line inside a folder. Or fiddling with your computer's cpu.

And did I mention that Alpha Centauri is neither available on Steam or Amazon for download? But I *did* see it advertised (download version) on a site that is over least two years old.

Those are the facts. Feel free to reach your own assessment. My theory: the game has been said to play too similarly to CIV 2, and is probably too easily broken (beaten) to make re-publishing it worthwhile. Pity.
