Before I even started playing Civilization V, I read a review by "Sullla" about Civ5 titled "What Went Wrong?" and was utterly stunned at the abysmal decisions made for this game and that went into constructing the game. Then I forgot about it for a few years, bought the Gold Edition, and found myself returning to the review to realize that virtually everything he had written about the base game back in 2010 still rang true as of 2013.

Comparisons with prior Civilization games are inevitable, but I've only played Civilization IV aside from this one, and having played Total War games before then, I was genuinely shocked by the AI in Civ4; namely, it was so REASONABLE. Whereas the AI in Total War frequently declared war on players for no reason, refused to come to terms even when they are on the brink of total extinction, and chosen to break lucrative peace and trade deals just to be a nuisance, the AI in Civ4 could actually be reasoned with, bribed against war (or bribed into joining a war on your side), made to accept unequal peace treaties when they're clearly losing, and able to maintain friendships and alliances with even the human player that could last literally the entire game.

Civ5 is exactly like the old Total War games. The AI is so insane and arbitrary that you're better off not even speaking to any of them for any reason. The gamemakers even streamlined this isolationism by removing lucrative trade options with other civs (such as trading technologies) and making agreements like Open Borders utterly pointless aside from moving units over their lands. Given how the AI denounces you (and even other AIs) for no reason whatsoever, Open Borders agreements are as worthless as the last square of toilet paper left on the roll.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok, but the military aspect is a awful! August 1, 2013

First the basics: Online purchasing of this product works fine. You basically buy an access code from Amazon and then go to "steam" to download the actual game. It takes a little messing around to get everything downloaded and setup up, but even without any significant computer skill I was successful.

The game installs / launches just fine and quickly you're into the action!

Onto the product itself...
I got this game really wanting to like it but honestly it's a bit of a let down. I grew up on Civ 2 and wasted God-only-knows how many hours of my youth playing it.

In general, Civ5 just doesn't feel as intuitive or logical to navigate around. Example, I often struggled to get pop-up info boxes to disappear. Another flaw is in trying to "purchase a unit" (rather than wait the required number of turns), I tap "purchase" and it changes to a different screen and I click "purchase" again then I'm back to the other screen. There's no acknowledgement / or info box that says "you bought _____ unit" or "You are lacking ____ resources"... very irritating!!

The AI players are not very good. In particular the diplomacy is a waste of time. The AI's denounce you for no reason and are completely irrational.

The biggest screw-up they made was with the military unit aspect. You are only allowed 1 unit per space!?! If I was limited 5 or 3 it wouldn't be so bad, but just one!?! Trying to move pieces past one-another is a nightmare and attacking cities is a huge ordeal. If you're big on military domination, I would suggest you skip this title and go with Age of Empires or something along those lines.

Civ 5 works and there are some good aspects to it, but honestly I regret spending the money and I doubt I'll play it much. :-(

5.0 out of 5 stars The Game That Got Me Into Turn-Based Strategy March 29, 2013
I've been interested in the genre for a while, bu this has been the first title that I've been able to actually get into and play without feeling overwhelmed by minutia or bogged down with needing to know exactly the right strategy in order to avoid failure.

3.0 out of 5 stars I preferred CIV 4 October 26, 2013

While the game is still good I preferred CIV 4. I also had game crashing issues every time I played online with friends when I never had issues with other games.

Fun way to jog the memory to brush up on historical figures and/or spark an interest in history! This game is a thinking/planning game that although addictive, you are able to save and pick back up later (zero lag time if you need to stop immediately).

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite games March 29, 2013
By RDJ
I have always been a fan of sim games like simcity and the sims, and have always been intrigued with rts's, but I have never been into turn based games. This, like the other reviewer, got me into turn based games. I have spent ovre 120 hrs with this Civ game, and this is the only game which I have ever bought dlc to go with. Some say its dumbed down from Civ IV. I cant speak to that and if that is the case, then im stupid, cause I love this game, the pace, the graphics, everything about it...
This is a great deal, considering that Civ 5 by itself is $30, G&K is $29 and between $2-$5 for each DLC included and that all adds up to lots of muh-la

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Game! Addictive! August 13, 2014
By Zachary

Was new to the genre when I bought this game, but I really enjoy it. Very fun and no two matches are the same. Challenging but enjoyable. The learning curve is a bit steep and there is a lot going on, but once the basics fall into place, the rest follows quickly. Games last a long time (easily 6+ hours) and definitely draw you in - can play nonstop for hours and hours if I'm not careful - but that's about the only negative. Lots of fun and a great game to play with friends (if you have the time)!
