OK, compared to all the flashy new games that are out these days the graphics are nothing, but it's so addictive!
I've been playing this game now for about 10 years and a few times a year I play it for hours on end, trying to build a good new society in the new world. You can build cities, assign certain tasks to people who are good at it and try to maintain friendships with the indians, the other European nations (you can choose between England, France, Spain and Holland) and eventually get your independance (after a war) with the mother country. If you liked the first version of Civilization you will like this, it's small, easy to play and you will actually learn something about colonial history as well!

I've been a long-time PC gamer: I purchased this game new (what, in 1993 or so?!), and it has always been my favorite. Other games have come along that I enjoy: Civilization, Roller Coaster Tycoon, the Sims, etc. but I always come back to Colonization as my first love. I think this game was the first time I spent an entire Saturday as a young teen, playing computer (and not video) games!
Be aware that the graphics are incredibly outdated, and that if you have a newer OS on your computer, like Windows XP, the game does not like to work: in general, it can be made to work, but mine, for instance, has a bug that makes me reboot every little while (worth it, if you like the game that much). I gave this game 4 stars since in order to play it on a newer operating system, it likes to crash: cuts back on the fun factor. You handle things on a turn-by-turn basis: with sailing back and forth from the home country's port to the new world, fighting or making peace with Indians & other European neighbors, as well as exploring & finding treasure, this game is tons of fun! I love assigning each colonist a specific task (clear road, get lumber, make rum, make hammers, etc.)... All in all, my favorite game of all time, and I keep holding my breath for an upgrade!

This is a great game but it is only compatable with Windows 98 and older operateing systems. You will enjoy it if you like Strategy games like Civilization, Alpha-Centauri, etc. It needs an updated graphics and needs to be made compatible with newer operating systems.

Like many of you, I was addicted to this game. As a college educated professional father of two, I am not ashamed to admit many late nights playing this game in it's original form. Even my young daughters got into the thick of it with me. It was just an absolutely addictive and fascinating game. Then, sadly, I had to continue upgrading my computers and over the years my beloved Colonization could no longer keep up with the newer operating systems. I even kept an old computer up and running strictly for Coloniztion until my wife made me get rid of the old dust collector. Sadly, my conquest of the New World ended. No longer was I able to uncover the coveted Fountain of Youth filling my European docks with indentured servants and carpenters. No longer was I able to weave bundles and bundles of cotten into cloth or make guns out of tools and lining veteran soldiers from town to town only to attack the Inca villages for the huge amounts of cash. Alas, my life quality was diminished.
Then, I found out about a new and updated version of Colonization. It is apparently part of a Sid Meiers trilogy and I was able to get a copy of just the updated version of this classic. I couldn't wait. I took a day off work when it came figuring I would pop it into the computer and isolate for the next few days. In short, I was hugely disappointed. This is not the same game. While the graphics are updated, they are almost too realistic. There is very little to discern terrain. The search for lost cities is not nearly as fun, there are no Fountains of Youth. The layout is so confusing it's difficult to tell where you are and what you can produce. I gave it a fair chance and put it away. It's been in a drawer ever since and now I am on the hunt for an older computer with an older OS to play the game I had come to know and love.

I originally was introduced to this game back in 1994 or 95 and fell in love with it then. I think I played it non-stop for weeks, then would take a break and come back to it all over again. Since then I've bought many new computers, and somewhere in the fray it never got transferred. I bought a new copy of it just a few years ago, and I still love playing it. It amazes me that in the era of XBoxes and Playstations, I still find this game entertaining, challenging, and smart! The key role of the game is to colonize the new world, and while you're doing that, fight off the occasional angry Native, or even worse, your neighboring colony from a different country. Best thing to do is to set up a few scouts to find that famous, yet hard to discover "fountain of youth", then you'll be overwhelmed with colonist wanting to develop your new colonies. Every time I play the game I have a different objective, should I prosper in peace, dominate the continent, or see how many colonies I can create, network together and manage? The options are there, and even after playing this game for so many years I'm still finding little secrets waiting to be discovered. This game will suck you in for hours, and if you use the cheats (which I somewhat enjoy) you'll wonder where the day went in no time. Now, what are you waiting for? Buy this game already! You won't be sorry.
