Siddartha: The Prince who became a Buddha, July 14, 2009
This review is from: Siddhartha: The Prince Who Became Buddha (Hardcover)
I happened to pick up this book in a book store and thought the photos were beautiful. When I came home I checked to see if Amazon had it for a cheaper price, since it was over $50 in the bookstore. I almost didn't buy it when I read the other very negative review. I'm glad I went ahead and bought it anyway. It is a beautiful book with most of the photos taken in India where the historical Buddha actually lived. The text was very accurate regarding the path he took to reach enlightenment. I am not a Buddhist newbie, but have been practicing for some years. My partner is a scholar who has studied Buddhism since the 60's.
This is a beautiful addition to anyone's library, especially if they are looking for a simple straight forward synopsis of the Buddha's historical path. I highly recommend it.
I hardly ever leave reviews here on Amazon, but I really didn't think this book deserved the poor rating it received.

Spectacular works of art?, October 29, 2008
This review is from: Siddhartha: The Prince Who Became Buddha (Hardcover)
In my opinion this deserves the award of WORST BOOK OF THE YEAR. The first part ( the life of the Buddha) must have been painful to write for that is how it reads. The translation is awkward and some proof reading would have been in order. The art works are far from spectacular (see product decription). I've come to expect more from this publsher.
The second part consists of photographs and a brief introduction. Basically a repetition of what came in part one and again badly translated and error prone. The photos have no captions and meander far and wide from what they're supposed to represent(the places the Buddha visited).
Overall White Star has published some fine books, especially their photographs, but this one is a real loser.
Save your money and stay away from it.
