This is a wonderful product for LIGHTWEIGHT sewing! I happen to use it on very sheer nylon for grooming smocks, so it converts my straight shanked Brother and Singer machines into sergers very easily. I know Singer has a heavier duty side cutter and plan to purchase it for future heavy weight sewing, but for now, this is the product that I will be using. You will need to read the instructions in order to get it to work the first time as I just expected it to go to work automatically. NOT! It's wonderful for the price for lightweight materials and I would recommend it for the hobby to advanced sewer who does not want to purchase a serger right away.

I purchased this product after spending too many hours fighting with my serger instead of sewing. I have tried it on both lightweight and heavyweight fabrics and it performs perfectly on one or two layers, trimming the fabric so that the overcast stitch just skims past the cut edge when the stitch moves to the right. I would note that it will not accept any overcast stitch that is wider than 5.0 mm, nor will it accept any overcast stitch that moves from left to center to right, as there is a bar that runs down the center of the stitch width that would block the center stitch.

This works reasonably well for an attachment. The end result is better looking than a simple zigzag stitch to finish a seam edge, but of course, not as nice looking as a serger seam, but that's to be expected. The instructions are difficult to understand, which is not unusual given that they are written by non-native speakers of English. I really could not figure how to make it cut until I watched the following YouTube tutorial, which is excellent. The secret is to make a cut at the top of the fabric to allow you to splay the fabric and straddle the left side of the cut fabric up and over the razor. (I know that didn't make a bit of sense - watch the tutorial!) [...]

It is what it is and does what it is supposed to. Good quality and I would recommend it to anyone but do not expect it act like a real serger, and it does NOT work with fabric that is thicker than medium weight.

It broke on me the first time I used it.
I was sewing and all was good, then a little rivet dropped out.
I took a look and there is no fixing it.
So i'm very upset.

Best deal for the generic. I also own a brother brand side cutter and both seem to be of equal performance.

I really like this product. I have been using it on a brother SQ9000. The only drawback so far is that the presser foot will not stay in a fully lifted position when released, so I have to manually hold the foot lever in it's highest position when readying the fabric for sewing, but I find this very minor. I am fairly certain this issue is unique to certain sewing machine models.

I see that a lot of people have reported that they had trouble figuring out how to use this. I personally found it obvious. Just look at where the blade is located on the foot, take a close look at how the lever that fits over your needle screw moves the blade up and down, and you will probably figure it out. The instruction say to precut a little bit of seam allowance off, but I don't do this. I just start with my fabric in front of the thee needle, as opposed to under it, and let the feed dog move the fabric under the blade for me.

I've read some reviews stating that they couldn't get the stitches to catch the fabric or lap around the raw edge. I'm guessing that those sewers are either not getting their needle positioned the correct distance from the blade, or they do not have enough excess seam allowance for the blade to comfortably sit between the stitching line and raw edge to make a clean cut. My machine uses digital settings and is pretty accurate. When I adjust my needle position to 5mm I get a perfectly overcast edge.

I have not attempted to use this foot on upholstery fabric, or for making jackets, jeans, or bags. I have been using it on a limited variety of garment fabrics for tops, lightweight pants, and skirts and it has been working very well with those materials.

The package arrived promptly. The cutter box looked like it had been mashed. The cutter itself was bent. I fixed it so it will work. The packing could have been cushioned better. The cutter works fine on light fabric but anything more than cotton, buy a real serger to do the job.
