If old school funk is your thing, you simply must have this double disk collection. It's packed with songs that combine great musical instrumention with "catchy" well written melodies and lyrics. These are definitely CD's that you can let play straight through and enjoy without skipping any tracks. LOVED IT!!!

Their treatment of "Always There" is legendary; infact, I like it better than the Ronnie Laws instrumental. Heard it first at dance clubs in Philly like the old Mark IV and Stingers. Have it on wax; wore it out. Their harmonies for a post-70's group are "a cut above" average, tho, they are not as daring or as rich as the Dramatics. Lovely tunes included here are "Time Has No Ending" and "I Know You Can"; "SOS" is funky, and the quasi-scat of "Keep that Same Old Feelin" is a more-than-adequate cover of an original from the Crusaders. I have seen but never heard the debut disc nor "Goin Bananas". If either are as good as "What You Need", I'll be in search of them as well. This one's the joint, and it fits in my radio show @ WEAA in Baltimore. By the way, it's Augie and his compadres backing Boz Scaggs on tracks from the Silk Degrees including "Lowdown."

"Always There"...Club/party favorite from back in the day, is worth the price! Couldn't find it on Amazon mp3 or Itunes.

I am fan of side effect and been looking for the CD for a while, I waiting for Side Effects - Goin' Bananas to be release again or buy Side Effects - Goin' Bananas album and then rip to my computer in order on hard drive. I would rather have Side Effects - Goin' Bananas CD then do all that work.

Have you ever bought an album for a single you freaked over and then found that, even after several listenings, that single is the one track on the album you really connect to? I am not saying this is a bad album; I think it is just not the kind of old school R&B I like best. I was hoping for a few more barn-stormers like "Always There", which features a HOT,dynamic arrangement and a female vocal so soulful it has made my jaw drop. This is a track that jumps out the speakers like a racing horse on fire; LOVE the horn arrangement, Love the funky keyboards, and the drum track is right there in the the socket. But most of all...that VOCAL..strong and soulful, sanctified and sexy as hell!! The rest of the tracks on the album vacillate between jazzed up old-school R&B (I tend to love a driving beat, not this kind of lighter, looser, funk-jazz style) and slow, love-oriented tracks that are well done vocally, but sometimes weak and cliched lyrically. I kind of, sort of liked "Dancin' Shoes" and "Honky Tonk Scat" but they pale in comparison to "Always There". Alas... the effect Side Effect was to have on me was really intense (I requested it all the time at a dance club in L.A. and am soo glad I got to dance to it!) but short-lived. I still play "Always There" and can tell you this is one jam you need to pump the volume up on; it's a very exciting record and sounds just as hot now as it did when it came out years ago. KILLER!, and worth the price of this album. I would like to say I loved some of the other tracks as much, but confess I did not. "Always There" is my jam.. but if you love that sort of mellow, jazzy R&B sound from back in the day, you will probably enjoy the whole album so buy it, but watch out for that explosion from your speakers on on Track 10..
