4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy, Progressive And Polished, January 19, 2010

Having never heard of this band, I checked out a few sample clips and decided to pick it up....and I actually haven't been able to take it out of my cd player for a week or so. Centaurus A play an intense, technical style of death metal with a few melodic elements and progressive, shifting song structures. Well-phrased solos, unexpected melodic interludes, and some very interesting rhythms add a lot of depth and longevity to this album. I find that since the resurgence of metal's popularity, so many bands sound the same that it's hard to set yourself apart in the saturated "progressive/technical/deathcore/metal" scene; but these guys are one of the best new bands I've heard in the genre. Add the excellent production and eerie, paranoid artwork and lyrics and you have a great release...I'd like to hear more from this band. For fans of The Red Chord, Faceless, Job For A Cowboy, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Side Effects welcomed, October 11, 2011

Okay, another death metal band I found on Metal Archives and I'm glad I did! Centaurus-A play a heavy technical style of death metal without going into the more brutal realm (meaning they ain't Suffocation). They throw in some fantastic soloing, some great progressive elements and some very worthy drumming. The vocals are guttural but intelligible. The best comparison is they sound like a 2nd generation Obscura (the band, not the album).

They hail from Germany and released this, their so far, only album, in '09. The effect on this album is technical but NOT noodle-y (Necrophagist's second album) -they create a very brutal but clinical sound/atmosphere without becoming sterile or boring. The guitar tone is just the way mama likes it: heavy & thick with just the right amount of soloing and breaks to make ya bang that head. The bass serves as the "thickener" -more the pulse really. You don't hear the bass as much as you feel it. The drumming is what you'd expect from a band of this caliber -damn good!

Clean production with enough "dirt" to keep ya hooked -make no mistake this is a more modern tech-death.

This album may not win awards like "Effigy of the Forgotten" or "Human" should have, but they play a mean version of modern tech-death that won't leave you wishing for your money back. Definitely worth the money and a great album by an underrated and obscure band.
