This is an excellent book. The speaker deals deftly with the issue of autoimmune disease: her poems are inventive, funny, and heartbreaking.

An enviable treatment of a topic, that treated elsewhere, might sound whiny or clinical. Also, a brilliant use of space and charts to build poems that maintain a strong sense of speaker and story (Nielsen's gift in her book, "No Magic" also). The writing is honest and biting, but never self-pitying. Pain becomes a pawn moved around these amazing checker boards. Pain becomes both subject and subject to whatever gorgeous moves that of mind, heart, wit and faith Nielsen runs it through. Somehow, astonishingly, though medications, side effects, there is fun in these maneuvers The reader is not happy to know that such pain can be known but is happy that if such pain must be, it can be made into both plaything and art in these capable hands.
