Book Description

May 19, 2006
Side Effects: The Screenplay offers a lighthearted but earnest look at the pharmaceutical industry from the point of view of Karly, a drug sales rep growing more and more conflicted about her role in health care. With free lunches, promotional freebies, ego-stroking, and other questionable sales tactics on parade, the story is at turns hilarious, troubling, and downright disturbing. As Karly climbs the corporate ladder, she manages to keep her conscience at bay until a shocking revelation finally gives her the courage to stand up and do the right thing.

Also included in Side Effects: The Screenplay is the transcript of "Money Talks: Profits Before Patient Safety," a documentary featuring eye-opening commentary on pharmaceutical industry sales tactics from respected experts in the medical field. Topics for Further Discussion, presented in a point/counterpoint format, and a Resource Guide round out the material, making Side Effects: The Screenplay an ideal choice for classrooms and book clubs.

The Side Effects educational package is currently being used as a learning tool for medical students and in business ethics classes. But with its highly accessible format, Side Effects: The Screenplay is recommended reading for anyone concerned about the condition of American health care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertainment with Utility, April 18, 2006
This review is from: Side Effects: The Screenplay (Paperback)
I know that few people read screenplays, but everyone should start. Screenplays are a great way to begin to understand how a film is made, and what its intention was. Side Effects the screenplay has the added utility of being socially and politically relevant. I found the screenplay to be a quick/entertaining read that taught me about film, human nature, and the "interesting ethics" of the pharmaceutical industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the Silver Screen, to the pages of a book... what an interesting project!, April 10, 2006
This review is from: Side Effects: The Screenplay (Paperback)
I saw Side Effects in the theater, and I loved it. It got me very interested in the issues surrounding this film and this director's story, so the resources and transposed documentary in the book were awesome. It gave me more in depth insight into the topic from some really great doctors and experts.
I also loved hearing from the director, and seeing the behind-the-scenes photos. It looked like such a fun film to make!
Side Effects: The Screenplay really helped me understand this project as a whole, and see how it all ties together. It's a great resource and a fascinating project. Way to go Side Effects!

5.0 out of 5 stars Profits vs. Patient Safety, April 4, 2006
By
This review is from: Side Effects: The Screenplay (Paperback)
Side Effects walks the line, if there is one, between full-blown political satire and romantic comedy. It's a great example of how to mix genres to make your message palatable to a wider audience.

The real priveledge of owning this screenplay is having the added bonus of the transcript to the documentary feature, "Money Talks: Profits vs. Patient Safety". It gives a thorough overview of the problems within the pharmaceutical industry that Karly struggles with in the film.

This would be a tremendous asset for anyone looking to open up a discussion on ethics within pharmaceuticals. It's eerily timely, and provides an entertaining and human entry point into a more serious discussion. Should be mandatory reading for anyone in the medical community, or - scratch that - just anyone.
