3.0 out of 5 stars Hard to clean
This unit does what it promises, but is very hard to clean. Personally, I'd rather stop the mixing process and use a spatula rather than spend time brushing each of the blades.

Although I think this is rather high in price, it does what it is supposed to do and I believe it is worth the money. I am purchasing another one for my daughter. The one complaint we have about the Kitchen Aid mixer is stopping to scrap down the bowl. With the bowl-lift this isn't very easy or quick to do because the beater is in the way. The SideSwipe makes the scrapping of the bowl unnecessary. It works great!

5.0 out of 5 stars sideswipe, October 27, 2009

i had all but stopped using my kitchen aid for anything but icings and whipped creams. i did not like having to stop drop and scrape down doughs and batters. i started using my handheld for cookies and cakes. the side swipe does a good job mixing the dough and scraping down the sides. its less messy and reduces the amount of time needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars No need to scrape!, December 31, 2009

This review is from: SideSwipe for KitchenAid 5- and 4.5 Quart Bowl-Lift Stand Mixers
I'd initially learned about this item while visiting my mom in Florida. We had stumbled upon a little kitchen supply shop in town and they were carrying them; alas, they were out of the size I needed...thank goodness I found them on Amazon.com!

My assessment: I just finished making my "infamous" New Year's Eve clam dip and utilized the "Sideswipe" for the first time since I received it a few days ago. I can attest that this accessory does exactly what it's intended to do; it scrapes (gently!) the sides of the bowl so effectively, there's truly no need for you to do so, which will save you both time and energy! It offers easy clean up as well, making it an ideal Kitchenaid cook's companion.

I highly recommend this product; just be sure to measure your existing beater blade (height and width), so you are sure to order the right size for your specific Kitchenaid mixer.

Happy Cooking!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but I like the Metro better, October 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SideSwipe for KitchenAid 5- and 4.5 Quart Bowl-Lift Stand Mixers
This functions well, but I bought both this and the Metro and really like the Metro better for two reasons. First, the Metro seems to clean the side of the bowl better (not much difference, but enough that it is noticeable) and Second, the Metro is easier to clean off excess batter. The tabs on the sides of the SideSwipe are a great place for lots of dough to cling. I need to use a small spatula or spoon to get the batter stuck between the tabs. Maybe not a big deal to most, but read on for an explanation

I need to offer an explanation in that I have limited use of my fingers due to nerve damage and was looking for something that would eliminate the less than perfect design of the KA metal blade. The need to grab another spoon to clean out from between the tabs can sometimes be difficult.

When making cookies that call for bits (chips, raisins, etc.) the Metro blade okay. However, when mixing large amounts of bits and chunks, this SideSwipe is actually better than the Metro because the bits seem to have an escape through the tabs, but most everything, I prefer the Metro.

I use both, but if I had to buy just one it would be the Metro.

I have retired the original aluminum blade (pain to clean by hand anyway) and rely on these aftermarket pieces.

I just tried out this beater today on a 16th anniversary bundt pan recipe from Nordicware. I absolutely did not have to scrape the beater at all except that the generous cake proportions resulted in a bit of batter ingrediants a bit above the silicone fans, and a bit of unicorporated ingredients near the top of the beater - not much. I think this is inevitable. I would give this a 5 star rating except for one small thing. With the protruding fins and the circular center, I found it more troublesome to scrap off the beater of excess batter when filling the cake pan. I could not use my spatula. I ended up using my finger (I did wash first :-)). I think the exra effort was worth it compared to the great job it did on scraping the majority of the bowl. I have seen there is another brand of blade where the silicone is continuous, and I have also seen concern from a baker that the silicone wings would put extra stress on the mixer. That is why I chose this blade with fins over the other.

It's not cheap, but it works great. Cookies are so much easier. Almost everything is so much easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Good, I Ordered Two More, February 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SideSwipe for KitchenAid 5- and 4.5 Quart Bowl-Lift Stand Mixers
This is a great addition to the KitchenAid mixer. Cooks Illustrated raved about it but for a long time it was available only for the tilt-head models. We tried it recently with muffins, cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies. It worked exactly as advertised. Although the directions advise that you might have to adjust the height using an adjustment screw in the back of the stand, I didn't find this necessary. It takes a bit longer to clean than the standard metal blade, hence my additional purchases, so I can just swap them out when prepariing different batters/doughs. I could not recommend it more highly.

This is the best improvement ever made to improve mixing on a KitchenAid mixer. It helps mix ingredients faster and more thoroughly and no more need to scrape the bowl. Just make sure you order the one to match the bowl on your mixer.

4.0 out of 5 stars My sister loves it, December 30, 2009

Being a "Compatible" accessory, i had my worries about this little fellow, but it seems as though it works with my sisters 5 qt mixer perfectly. IT does everything it says it does... no needing to scrape the sides anymore...

Though expensive, it is effective, and very easy to clean.

Good Quality, Good Effect, Good Product. If you have a Kitchen aid, you need this!
