Book Description

3 and upSidekicks
I, Guy Martin (a.k.a. Speedy, the sidekick to Pumpkin Pete), can now run 102 miles an hour. Not only that, my spandex outfit is the least cheesy of all the sidekick costumes. But now I’ve got real problems. Pumpkin Pete is a terrible sidekick mentor. The evil Dada Robah is trying to squish all the superheroes of the League of Big Justice. And worst of all, Prudence Cane — the love of my life — still doesn't know I exist.

Do I use my super speed to solve all these problems?

How about two out of three?

There's only one way to find out.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8--This second book in the series is a funny, clever homage to classic comic-book superheroes and their loyal companions. Thirteen-year-old Guy Martin, aka Speedy, is part of the League of Big Justice and serves as sidekick to Pumpkin Pete (he has all the powers of a pumpkin). Guy and his fellow sidekicks (who include Spelling Beatrice and Boy-in-the-Plastic-Bubble Boy) are happily learning all about being superheroes from their mentors when Dr. Robot, "a four-foot madman bent on squishing everything taller than he was," comes to town with a giant robot. Speedy then valiantly tries to find a way to stop the evil scientist. This is a hilarious spoof on the superhero genre with all of the classic elements exaggerated perfectly--the odd superpowers of the heroes and the sidekicks, the nefarious and goofy plot of the supervillain and his maniacal rantings, and the cluelessness of the general public. Small illustrations head off each of the chapters and capture the cartoon quality of the characters. There is enough action, adventure, and humor to attract fans of comic books as well as reluctant readers.--Lynda S. Poling, Long Beach Public Library, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids loved these books, May 5, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Sidekicks 2: Operation Squish! (Paperback)
I have two boys and a little girl and they loved these books. It has made my life easier at bedtime because they want to hear what happens next and rush to get ready for bed. I cannot tell you how upset I was when we finished the second book and had to scramble to find replacements that just do not do the job that Sidekicks does. The book is so funny for adults and kids. I found myself reading and finishing the books after the kids would fall asleep. Waiting on book 3 and I only hope they keep making more until my kids can read themselves to bed. Although I will keep reading them on my own.
