5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful box set from Klaus Voormann!, October 20, 2009

This review is from: A Sideman's Journey (Audio CD)
This box set is absolutely beautiful! First, the packaging is spectacular--the box itself is a work of art with beautiful glossy images and design elements everywhere you look. Inside, there is a book of fantastic photos from Klaus, as well as the story behind 'A Sideman's Journey'. The CD contains 14 wonderful songs performed by friends and colleagues. Many of the tracks are songs that Klaus played on originally, such as My Sweet Lord, The Mighty Quinn, You're Sixteen, Just Like a Woman, and So Far, to name some of them. The song choices are mostly familiar so the CD is an instant favorite from the first time you play it. Particular stand-outs for me are You're Sixteen, sung by Max Buskohl, So Far, sung by Bonnie Bramlett, and I'm in Love Again, with Paul McCartney on vocals.

The DVD is a great added feature. Klaus brings you into the studio and you get to experience some of what he must have felt putting this project together, seeing so many of his friends, and having a great time reminiscing and creating a lot of wonderful new music. You can see Klaus the producer at work, bringing his vision for each song to completion. And even more fun is seeing Klaus the musician, playing his bass and collaborating with so many other fantastic artists. There is a lot of fun footage of Paul McCartney, the Manfreds (former members of Manfred Mann), Ringo Starr, Bonnie Bramlett, Dr. John, Yusuf Islam and many others!

Finally, there is a beautiful numbered handsigned lithograph included in the box set that alone is worth more than the price of the box.

Few musicians have actually earned legendary status, and Klaus Voormann is one of those few. He is equally talented in both music and art and through both has contributed a great deal to some of the best loved music ever recorded. It's so fantastic that Klaus, the sideman, is finally in the forefront with A Sideman's Journey!

Marvellous package from a wonderful musician. The set includes a "handsigned numbered print" and all profits go to a charity.
