Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording

By the time Orbital released its fourth album, the Hartnoll brothers were strongly tipped as techno heavyweights alongside more commercially palatable prospects like Underworld and Prodigy. Yet, instead of catering to the curious, they presented their most self-indulgent album to date with In Sides. Packaging the 24-minute symphonic track "Out There Somewhere?" with the loopy psychedelic flight of "P.E.T.R.O.L.," they created a most unusual and intriguing collection. Despite their best efforts, though, "The Box" still packed the same insistent rhythm that made "Belfast" such an indelible club staple, while a bonus disc featured live versions of "Satan," "Halcyon," and the duo's streamlined themes from The Saint. --Aidin Vaziri

Amazon.com

The Hartnoll brothers remain the great hope of ambient techno--sleeker, smarter, and way more dynamic than the rest. The duo's third full-length disc is a sonically splendid variant Snivilisation (1994). --Jeff Bateman

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have in dance music, April 13, 2004
I was a late bloomer when I got into techno music. I didn't get into it until I was in college and started going to nightclubs where I was exposed to some really great dance music. I also lived with a guy who was into techno music. Not only did he expose me to Delerium and Leftfield, but he also exposed me to what I consider to be a classic and definitive album in techno music...Orbital's "In Sides". I first heard Orbital on some import compilation of techno music, the song I heard was "The Box". I loved the melodies as well as the intricate beats. A couple of years ago I bought "In Sides" when I found a copy of the cd in the used bins. I haven't listened to it in a long time because of my constant change in musical obsessions. I decided to listen to "In Sides" tonight because I haven't heard it in a long time. Unlike a lot of techno artists/groups, their music doesn't hold up very well with time but Orbital is an exception. Eight years later and "The Box" and "The Girl With the Sun in Her Head" still sounds fresh to me. I love all the songs on the first disc. there isn't one song I don't like on it. The second disc is a live disc except for "The Saint" and "The Sinner". I like "The Saint" but I wasn't too wild about "The Sinner". Overall "In Sides" is still the masterpiece that I thought it was a few years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars More difficult than the brown album ... but worth it, October 9, 2002
By Steve (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
Like many others, my experience with Orbital began with the brown album (which I purchased after having stumbled into Halcyon+on+on on the Mortal Kombat soundtrack). Shortly after falling in love with it, I purchased In-Sides, was disappointed, and put it on the shelf, forgotten. When I decided to give it another spin some two years later, however, I had a completely different experience--it's now my favorite Orbital album (although the brown album is a very close second), primarily because of the 28-minute "Out There Somewhere?", which never fails to provide me with a unique and moving musical experience every time I listen to it. The unceasing, subtle shifts in the many layers of sound are nothing short of breathtaking. But make no mistake--the rest of the album is first-rate, too. I particularly enjoy the haunting vocals of "Dwr Budr" and the organ in "The Girl with the Sun in Her Head." (Oddly, though, I never much cared for "The Box," although it's commonly considered one of Orbital's best tracks. To each his own, I suppose.)

In any case, if you're at all into electronica, buy this album--then give it a chance. In-Sides is pretty heady stuff; there aren't many catchy riffs that you'll come away whistling. But if you really *listen* to each of the tracks, your patience will be well rewarded with a positively enlightening experience; mine certainly was.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insides story, October 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: In Sides (Audio CD)
I was ill in Intensive care for 4 months totally paralysed (I had Guillian Barre Syndrome)..desparate to ease my boredom my folks bought in a portable CD player. Most music gave me headaches, until a week later a nurse put on Insides...after 40mins he asked 'How do u do that?' He nodded to the monitors and my BP and heart rate had sunk down as I swam blissfully amongst the album. Im not a hippy type, but that album was a treat for me....I can still put it on and get lost in it. The best album I have ever heard

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone talks about The Box, but for my money...
'Adnan's' alone is worth more than whatever this CD is selling for. Of course as a bonus you can have The Box, and the 2nd/bonus disc too! Pure hypnotic genius. A must have!
