Like the 1st US Sharpshooters, the 2nd was formed by Col. Hiram Berdan an ambitious inventor and celebrated rifleman. Both Sharpshooter regiments were comprised of hand picked expert marksmen capable of delivering punishing firepower to the enemy on any battlefield. Their distinctive green uniforms were influenced by European riflemen and were an early attempt at a practical form of camouflage.
