Product Description

This is the complete archive for the legendary alternative political comic strip Sidewalk Bubblegum. Started in 1993 and retired in 2001, Clay Butler’s self-syndicated weekly political cartoon, Sidewalk Bubblegum, has been seen in hundreds of magazines, books, and zines including Z Magazine, Playboy, Funny Times, Comic Relief, Creative Loafing, Metro Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Sentinel and Finland’s largest Swedish-language daily newspaper, the HUFVUDSTADSBLADET.

Eschewing the typical gag format and avoiding topical references Clay Butler focused on the issues behind the issues. Even though the first strips were penned nearly seventeen years ago, they often read as if they created today. Some were prophetic as the message and issues Clay described began to hit us full force nearly a decade or more later, while others capture a moment in time, a way of thinking, a burst of lunacy that typify a uniquely American way of being.

Freely jumping from the past to the present and into the future, Clay uses juxtaposition and irony to remind us that were are not as free from our most sordid past as we’d like to think.

Clay Butler also chose to write this introduction in third person so he could toot his own horn without coming across as a complete douche. Hey, someone's got to do it.

Here’s what other people have said:

“Clay Butler’s Sidewalk Bubblegum cartoons are not just hilarious- they are intelligent, witty, acutely perceptive social commentary, profound cultural analysis in the guise of devastating satire.” -
Howard Zinn
Author of A People’s History of the United States.

“Just a note of thanks for the strips, which we all enjoyed, down to the grandchildren.”
Noam Chomsky
Intellectual Superhero and author of Manufacturing Consent

“The wonderful clarity of Clay Butler’s line work is matched only by the pointed acidity of his commentary. Sidewalk Bubblegum is a treat for the mind as well as the eye.” -
Tom Tommorrow
Creator of This Modern World.

“Clay Butler’s “Sidewalk Bubblegum” achieves the impossible: Elevating the humble gag cartoon from the insipid one-liners of yesteryear–and today’s “New Yorker”–to relevant, postmodern comments on the state of society. Deceptively simple and easy on the eye, it’s one of the most subversive graphic commentaries around.”
Ted Rall
Creator of the nationally syndicated political comic strip Rall

“I’ve admired “Sidewalk Bubblegum” for years. It’s more than appealing artwork, more than good storytelling, more, even, than intelligent, sympathetic politics. “Sidewalk Bubblegum” possesses some kind of underlying structural efficiency that conveys maximum thought through minimal information. In 4 panels or less, it precisely illustrates volumes of political and social commentary. The result is simple, charming, and devastating. Oh yeah, it’s funny, too.”
Nina Paley
Creator of Nina’s Adventures

“Clay Butler rushes where most cartoonists fear to tread. He takes aim at crucial- and unsettling- realities of our daily lives. If truth is the target, Butler hits plenty of bulls-eyes. You may cringe – but you’ll also laugh… and think!” –
Norman Solomon
Author of the weekly syndicated column Beat and author of Adventures in Media-land.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Political Commentary That Takes No Prisoners, May 23, 2010
This review is from: Sidewalk Bubblegum Complete Collection 1993-2001 (Kindle Edition)
Well, this is my comic strip so I'm a bit biased, but this collection rocks! If you like strips by guys like Ted Rall, Lloyd Dangle, and Tom Tomorrow you will probably like these. While I'm a left libertarian type guy, my goal of the strip was to highlight truths as I see them, not to take partisan cheap shots. Therefore people take away different meanings from my strips depending on their own political philosophy and personal life experience. You can view the entire collection on my website ([...]) and even download the entire collection as a PDF for free. I priced this collection at the super low price of $[...] on purpose. I want to make it affordable as possible and mitigate any buyer remorse. With about 250 comics in this collection that's less than a penny a chuckle! What a sweet deal!

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny stuff, Some of the best political cartoon-strips I've ever read, April 9, 2011

My title says it all plus this kindle book is only 2 bucks and you'll get a kick out of it. Looks pretty good on the kindle but saving kind of sucks because you can only save a group of strips at a time and not just one. I'm planning to print out some of this strips and send them to a few Tea Party morons I know.
He has a strip showing a man with his arm cutoff and bleeding and saying something like "yeah, but I want to be able to see my own doctor", after reading that I almost choked on my coffee, lol.
Good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Biting editorial voice, September 23, 2010

This collection is a great value compared to other editorial cartoon collections available. First and foremost, it is funny. Second, many of the insights are spot on. I wish it were possible to share some of these cartoons on Facebook and Twitter like it's possible to share normal book passages, because this is a voice that deserves to be heard.

The writer/cartoonist tackles a wide variety of topics from an anti-corporatist, pro-libertarian point of view. I didn't agree with all of the implications, but I was both challenged and entertained by this collection. My one quibble is that a few cartoons were too sexual for my taste, though many of those were confronting sexism and homophobia.

If you're into editorial cartoons, this is a must-have.
