Biography

Hailing from Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN and schooled individually in jazz, roots and blues music, Mike Mattison and Paul Olsen began playing together in the mid-1990s. After being recognized with Minnesota Music Award nominations for Best R&B Group and Best Male Vocalist, the duo decamped to Brooklyn, NY in 1997 and have since stomped their way through nearly every venue in the metropolitan New… Read more in Amazon's Scrapomatic Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

It's difficult to categorize Scrapomatic's Sidewalk Caesars as anything other than generically "blues-based" but this act, led by Derek Trucks' singer Mike Mattison and guitarist Paul Olsen, is defined by its eclectic qualities. The duo wend their way through a heady, rootsy mix of swamp rock, soul, gospel, Delta blues and even punk based music on their third release. They combine disparate elements with predominantly original compositions to yield an inimitable, even genre breaking gumbo. Is "Long Gone" country, blues, or rock? How about the peppy, hip shaking "The Fire Next Time" or the acoustic, folksy "Drunken Spree"? The truth is that these songs are that and more. The tunes' deceptively simple structure is a moving target, anchored by Mattison's gruff, malleable vocals, Olsen's chameleonic guitar and often obtuse lyrics that convey mood over specific meaning. Percussionist Count M'Butu from Trucks' band and the guitarist himself contribute to a few tracks, yet Scrapomatic's taut, concise material and distinctive sound make this band far more than a spinoff. Olsen's rather flimsy voice is no match for Mattison's husky attack however when the two combine on "Hook, Line and Sinker," the effect, like the album, is compelling and different from anything else in a musical format that, thankfully, can't be pigeonholed. -- Hal Horowitz

Product Description

SIDEWALK CAESARS, is the second release by the popular hybrid blues ensemble, Scrapomatic. Spotlighting Derek Trucks Band lead singer Mike Mattison and award winning songwriter Paul Olsen, Scrapomatic's latest album combines the creative elements that have made them a popular act at clubs, festivals, and universities nationwide. SIDEWALK CAESARS furthers the band's distinctive forays into a stunning mixture of blues, soul, and related roots-oriented genres. Anchored by the tight knit rhythm section of Ted Pecchio and Tyler Greenwell, veterans of Susan Tedeschi and Col. Bruce Hampton's bands, and dynamic guitarist Dave Yoke, the album boasts guest sit-ins from Derek Trucks and notable percussionist, Count M Butu. Great bookings in the works, including summer-winter tours with the Trucks-Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cloud Going By, November 29, 2009

This review is from: Sidewalk Caesars (Audio CD)
Scrapomatic's "Sidewalk Caesars" is a compelling set that uses the blues as a departure point. "Killing Yourself On Purpose" lopes along with a gentle beat and whirls up a storm, "Throw my ashes in the river; Hang my halo out to dry; Throw my ashes in the river or catch me like a cloud going by." "I Want the Truth" bounces to a subtle throb before exploding with Derek Trucks' stinging lead guitar. "The Fire Next Time" pulses with Tyler Greenwell's slamming percussion on a shuffle that seems like a hybrid between blues & Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks. "I Just Wanna Hang Around With You" jives at full speed on a stellar track, "You can keep the cash, you can keep the stash, you can keep my shepherd too." "Sidewalk Caesars" is an impressive disc well worth seeking out. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album with no limits, July 22, 2008

This album is (after only one listen) right there at my current top. The description is right on. The elements of blues, rock, jazz, country, soul all exist here on this album, and do so in good measure. Mike sounds great as usual. Put this on and your ears will thank you for it!

I first heard of Scrapomatic from Pandora Radio. I like their vocals especially some of the harmonizations. A good Blues/Rock collection.
