Editorial Reviews

Product Description

"Sidewalk Saints" re-creates the music of the blues/gospel guitarists who played on America's street corners during the 1930s & '40s. Ben Bowen King, who has recorded for Smithsonian Folkways and Vanguard, is a master of the slide/resonator guitar. King is joined by Covita Moroney on vocals providing "Baptist moans." The CD features "classic" gospel tunes like "Amazing Grace," "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" and "In The Sweet By & By." King is backed up by a "sidewalk symphony" orchestra consisting of Coke bottles, tambourines, bass drums and kitchen spoons. The result is a spirit-filled, spontaneous sound that revives an exciting chapter in Americana music.

Review

"King is a great guitarist." --John Schaefer, WNYC, New Sounds

"I just listened to 'Sidewalk Saints.' LOVE IT. I'm crazy about 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.' This is so refreshing and fun and also, it's got the old gospel thing going for it, but with a new attitude. --Gordon Atkinson, Real Live Preacher.Com

If King can continue to develop such fruitful hybrids, he could become one of the major performers in the genre. --J.D. Considine, Washington Post

These old gospel tunes like "Fly Away" or "Some Fine Morning" remind me of music that I spent a lot of time with growing up; good memories. All the tunes on here have that "homegrown" sound that's missing from so many CDs nowadays -- especially gospel discs.

Refreshing! The instrument itself is unique to hear as well as it being an instrumental album. Usually when someone covers a tune, they perform it as is, with their own ego stamped on it. If you are going to cover someone else's classic, re-arrange it! Now you have something to offer us, a new rendition not just a cover. This is a great way to pay respect and have some fun. This is exactly what we have here with Sidewalk Saints! I don't even recognize some of these standards and that's a credit to Ben Bowen King's music. Wasn't this guy Mexican. Well now he's B.B. King.

Sidewalk Saints is the Sunday morning side of the slide guitar. If you like country blues, you'll like Ben King's guitar work. This is real roots music.

too bad the guitar playing is marred by the background noise/voices/clapping, extraneous sounds added that only
detract from the guitar playing

Lots of talent here. Lots of talent going to waste. Samey as hell. Flirts with a really interesting acoustic slide guitar version of "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" for 46 minutes.
