Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The Wayside School was supposed to be one story high, with 30 classrooms side by side; instead, it was built sideways, with 30 one-classroom stories. As befits such a strange school, these tales are a bit strange too. In one, Jason is stuck to his seat by a large wad of chewing gum. His teacher tries throwing ice water on him (to chill the gum to brittleness) and turning him upside down. She even contemplates cutting his pants off. Finally, though, he falls from his upside-down position when kissed (ugh!) by one of the girls in the class. Other tales include a bit of a moral, such as the story of Kathy, whose assumption that no one will ever like her is proved right, or the story of Bebe, who draws quickly but without artistic merit. The quirky humor in this book is appealing to children, and it makes a good read-aloud book for the younger set. (Ages 5 to 12) --Richard Farr

From the Publisher

Lois Sachar, best-selling author of the Wayside School series, knows how to make kids laugh. And there are laughs galore in this popular book, now available again in hardcover. Meet Mrs. Gorf, the teacher who turns the students in Wayside School into apples.

I was in 2nd grade in 1998 when a teacher read this book to my class. We all adored it. Louis Sachar uses a brand of humor that almost comes through as anti-establishment and of course appeals to children. One of my favorite quotes is about children being smarter than teachers, to which the child who hears it replies, "Oh, everyone knows that."

I picked this up last night after digging through old books of mine and read it again. It was just as good.

NOTE: We got the paperback, not the hardcover, but I could only find the hardcover on amazon.com. Russian Blue Witch is reading Sideways Stories from Wayside School book by Louis Sachar to us. It's very funny. In chapter 1 it's silly how the apples trample Ms. Gorf and the 2nd chapter about Mrs. Jewls the kids are "terribly afraid of nice teachers" and that's not all, Mrs. Jewls is "terribly afraid of cute children" and the children are SO cute she thinks they're monkeys and when they are trying to explain they are not she gets confused. It's great, but in chapter 3 or 4 or something the teacher expects the children to count their hair...well, they can't do that! And it says "The builder said sorry for the terrible mistake" but RBW says "The builders said sorry for the terrible mistake and I said builders because one person can't create a building," or something like that. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

It would be impossible to overstate how much I love this book. Incredibly clever and humorous, it is up there at the top of my childhood memories. I bought this for my nephew, opened the package in the car, opened the book just to flip through, and ended up reading a couple of chapters on the way to our destination. It was still just as entertaining as when I was younger. Louis Sachar is such a talented writer, and I have loved every book of his I have ever read, but the Wayside School books have an incredibly special place in my heart.

This book was a great story for my son. It keep his attention. He needs to read a certain amount of books each semester for Language Arts class 5th grade. He hates to read. I have to really search to find books to keep his attention. He loved the small chapters. The different charaters made him stay interested to the end. My 3rd grade daughter also like the book. Both children receive 100% on test.

I think this book is really good! I like this book because it is very funny! It's about aCrazy School called wayside and there is no 19th story, but there is a 20th to the 30th And a 1st to the 18th, but there is no 19th story. The story is manly about the 30th story. The teacher on the 30th story is named Mrs. Jewls. The teacher before Mrs. Jewls was Mrs.Gorf. Mrs. Gorf turned the kids in her class into apples.

A Kid's Review on February 1, 2007
Format: Hardcover
In Sideways Stories at Wayside School there was a huge mistake! They were supposed to build all thirty classes in a row, but instead of that they built thirty stories high. You'll meet a teacher Mrs. Jewls who has a terribly nice face, Maurecia who loves ice cream, Bebe who is a good artist, Dana who has one hundred and twenty four mosquito bites and lots of other characters, too. Find out and read this book.

This book is great because it has action and it is so fictional. I chose this because I am reading this in my class. My rating is 5 stars because it is very funny and it has jokes and stuff.:-)
