Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3 In this spoof, Sidney Rella is left with the chores while his parents go to work and his brothers try out for the football team. Sidney's great wish is to be on that team. Enter his fairy godfather, who makes short shrift of the chores and sends Sidney off to try-outs. He succeeds, and on the day of the big game, his fairy godfather waves him off, resplendent in uniform and glass sneakers. Time runs out and Sidney Rella returns home minus one glass sneaker. The jig is up when the coach arrives with it. Sidney becomes the country's best football player and grows up to be president of a corporation. The comical three-color illustrations and text blend well together. Kids may get a chuckle from this tongue-in-cheek story, but one must question the assumption that all one needs to be a success is a head start from a fairy godfather. Did the fairy godfather's wand extend to providing the talent as well? It's all in good fun, though, and kids looking for an easy reader may identify with Sidney Rella and fantasize how their lives might change if their fairy godfather suddenly appeared. 5.0 out of 5 stars A modern woman's take on a classic fairytale, September 30, 2000
By
This review is from: Sidney Rella and the Glass Sneaker (Paperback)
Sidney Rella And The Glass Sneaker, is a fairytale that a 21st century mother would not mind retelling to her children. This is a fractored fairytale. This fairytale's moral is that beauty is only skin deep. There is an attractive princess and a plain girl. The attractive princess becomes less desirable as the story progresses and her "ugliness" shows through. Contrasted to the plain Jane whose true inner beauty is relived through the plot of the story. It a great twist to a classic tale. This fairytale is a breathe of fresh air to the happily, beautiful ever afters.
