Editorial Reviews

Nonstop action…. A strong cast of supporting characters supplies a continuing stream of engaging subplots that play out within the larger takeover story. Kernick keeps all the balls in the air as he delivers an exciting performance.” (Publishers Weekly)

"A fast-moving yarn with short chapters, tight writing, plenty of violence, and characters both flawed and believable... Kernick is a first-rate storyteller." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Simon Kernick writes great plots. Great characters. Great action." (Lee Child)

"Simon Kernick writes with his foot pressed hard to the pedal. Hang on tight!" (Harlan Coben)

Customer Reviews

This is the first book by Simon Kernick that I've read and I intend to catch up on his other books.
Although the author offered an epilogue of sorts at the end about one of the characters, the outcome for two of the other very important characters was left hanging.

The fast paced, action packed, tight plotting provided a high-speed thrill ride with all its ups and downs, engaging to the very last page.

I usual don't pick up books like these. Only once in a blue moon, and it was Siege's turn this time. I picked this one up because I thought it would be really suspenseful and I'm a sucker for awesome thrillers. With a line like this:

"Shots ring out. Some guests panic. Others text their loved ones. A few try to escape. All are united by their desire to live. And at the center of it all is one man who has information so dangerous that it must be kept safe--at any price."

How could I not pick it up?

Unfortunately it didn't quite live up to my expectations. While I was still fully engaged in the book and the story that was being told, it somehow lacked that suspense I had been craving. Maybe it was all just too predictable? I could tell there would be no real tragedies, no real out of control moments where it would all go to hell. Because even though it did have it's moments it all felt entirely too choreographed. The plot line about the man with dangerous information felt cheap. It was over and done with so quickly that Kernick might as well not have put it in at all. So for a book that was supposed to bring about a sense of suspense and thrill it fell short.

But this isn't just about a cheap thrill. It's supposed to be about the terror these people felt and about how one seemingly incongruous decision could completely alter their lives. How they were able to eventually overcome their terror and save themselves and learnt to truly live. But, somehow, it fell short again. Yes it did convey this message at the end, but the feelings weren't quite there. The terror and worry that I was supposed to feel towards all these people just wasn't there.

I am a huge Kernick fan and love his style of writing. I can only compare reading his books to driving a Ferrari at full speed and no brake pedal in sight! This book was no different for each of the 368 pages. The awful thing about this book is that the world we live in today presents many situations like this one. This situation is where people are held hostage fearing for their lives; while others fight their own war.

From the very beginning of the story we are plunged into the horrific situation that many will find themselves in. You are quickly introduced to quite a lot of characters and in the beginning I wondered why there were so many. However, pretty soon you realise that all these people are going to collide in the most horrific of circumstances.

The short sharp chapters kept me turning the pages until I realised it was past my bedtime and I had demolished over half the book in one sitting! The characters in the book seem to grab at your emotions for one reason or another and there are so many different stories about why people are there you become intrigued to the point of distraction. One character named Scope really caught my eye and I would just love to see him feature in other books, but who knows what My Kernick will bring us next.

There are plot twists and surprises by the bucket load, so you won't be disappointed in that sense. The only un-nerving thing for me is that this is all too much of a reality. Working in any major city on the world you will feel all too easily the reality bursting through the seams of the pages. Simon Kernick has once again released a book that will have you on the edge of your seat and as ever I end up disappointed that I have to wait so long for the next one!

A truly thrill a minute novel that captures and keeps the reader glued right from the get go. Action is set in London, and opens with two bombs going off in two
train stations with consequent casualties. These are followed by the well planned and extremely well executed take over of a major hotel near Hyde Park. The Hotel Stanhope
is filled with guests all of whom are subdued by the terrorists making the attack. The leader of the terrorist group termed "Fox" tells the police responding to the
alarm that they are a group of Islamic soldiers and they demand that England back off from their campaigns against the Arab world. The truth of what they want and
who they are is an integral part of the novel, with Kernick doing a super job of fleshing out some of them.
Victims of the attack include an ex soldier who has just killed three people and was preparing to leave the hotel, a man suffering from terminal cancer that has
checked into a room with plans to end his pain via suicide, a mother and son on vacation in England from their home in Florida, the police officer placed in
charge of the situation who is forced to come to grips with a horrible choice in working the crime and a very pretty assistant manager of the hotel that has
just become engaged. Each of these people act individually and than together attempting to survive the take over and proceed to come alive in the capable hands of
Simon Kernick. Also making her appearance towards the end of the book is a maverick police officer named Tina Boyd whom Kernick indicates in an afterward
will make additional appearances in other books of his.
