Book Description

August 2008 Guardians of Ga'hoole
Much-loved author Kathryn Lasky continues to bring the fantastic Guardians of Ga'Hoole owl world to life in this, the fourth book of the New York Times bestselling series.

Soren's beloved mentor, Ezylryb, is finally back at the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. But all is not well. There's a war between good and evil in the owl kingdom. On one side is a group led by Soren's fearsome brother, Kludd, who wears a terrifying metal mask to cover his battle-scarred face. On the other side are the owls of the Great Ga'Hoole Tree, who must fight to protect their legendary tree from Kludd's attacks. Soren, his friends, and the other owls at the Great Ga'Hoole Tree enter into fierce combat against Kludd's forces. They win a major battle, but warfare is not over yet.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Kathryn Lasky captivates us with the gripping and terrifying events that fill the lives of these extraordinary owls. . . Spiced with a sprinkling of mythology, mysticism and wonderful characterizations, The Siege is an excellent continuation of a unique series. --Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Review

[Pamela Garelick] delivers the depth of personality Lasky has invested in her flock of owls and energetically leads us through the plot twists. Garelick's distinguished yet likable voice is simply wonderful--her lively characterizations of little owls and maternally inclined snakes all delight. She's also expert at recapping the owl's complex history so that it's clear to new listeners, yet fresh for the already familiar. --AudioFile

The story's fast pace, menacing bad guys, and flashes of humor make this a good choice for reluctant readers, while the underlying message about the power of legends provides a unifying element and gives strong appeal for fantasy fans. --School Library Journal --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

More About the Author

Hi Readers! Thanks for coming by my author page. I've written all sorts of books - from fantasy about animals to books about science. One of my favorite animal fantasy series, Guardians of Ga'Hoole, is a major motion picture. I liked writing about Ga'Hoole so much that I decided to revisit that world in a new series, Wolves of the Beyond. Visit my website, www.kathrynlasky.com to see a slide show about the real wolves I researched for the series and for the latest update on the Guardians of Ga'Hoole movie. All my best, Kathryn

5.0 out of 5 stars They just keep getting better, March 22, 2005

I don't know how the author does it, but these books just keep getting better. In the first half of the story, Soren and his six friends are sent on a top-secret mission back to St. Aggie's. While they are there, the book gets a bit confusing (St. Aggie's is a confusing place, after all), but after a thrilling action scene and a subsequent surprise reunion with an old friend (I'm not telling who, so give it up), you'll be riveted. By the end, the owls have been through a war, exposed a possible spy, and lost someone close to them (but once again, I won't spoil it for you). Although warfare between the good and evil owls is a major theme here, don't worry about reading chapter after chapter of battle scenes. Rather than simple fighting, the war is waged mostly through strategy, so it's fun and intriguing to read, not repetitive. I also really liked how the author switched to the vantage point of Kludd, aka Metal Beak, at a few intervals. It was interesting to learn more about what made him the way he is.
If I have one complaint (I say "if" because it's really more of a comment), it's that Ezylryb's Winston Churchill-inspired "speeches", while moving, seem to be of a different tone than the rest of the book. They're a cool addition overall, they just don't fit quite right.
Overall, this book completely riveted me, just like the previous three. If you liked those, buy this immediately. If you haven't read those yet, buy them and then buy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars good, June 8, 2004

I really like this series. The author gives these owls such great personalities and makes you really care.

In this book, Ezlyryb is back and Kludd is mad. Soren and the "Clan of Clans" must go to the dreaded place of St. Aggies to find out weather St. Aggies and the Pure ones have joined forces. Also, The pure ones plan a major attact on the Great Tree.

Characters are developed more. Otulissa is becoming a lot more llikable, we see Twilight become a little more than war, and of course Soren (the main character) is developed more. My only problem is Eglantine, Soren's sister, is almost non-existant.

Yet another good book in this great series. I cant wait for the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soren lover Dewlap hater, August 14, 2005
The Siege is the best book in the series! There's two adventures in one, with Soren and the rest of the Chaw of Chaws at St Aggies and the battles in the end of the book. I would not recommend reading this book without reading the rest of the series.
