Editorial Reviews

Review

Siege Warfare represents a valuable resource in the library of anyone interested in the contours of early modern warfare. The full meaning of developments in siege warfare remains still to be worked out by historians, but we can be confident that, when they do, they will use the materials so ably assembled by Christopher Duffy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent academic work, September 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Siege Warfare: The Fortress in the Early Modern World 1494-1660, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
This is an excellent work that covers a vast topic well. In addition to technical developments in military engineering and the weapons driving it, this book gives a good overview of the social, economic, and political climate under which this occurs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard going for the non-expert, July 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Siege Warfare: The Fortress in the Early Modern World 1494-1660, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Siege warfare is a comprehensive and well presented study of warfare in the period considered. But it is perhaps not very accessible for the non-expert. The politics and history of this period is fairly complicated, and if you don't have a grasp of it (as I don't) you will find that you can't follow the text very easily.
