5.0 out of 5 stars Good router if you don't upgrade your firmware
I have used this router for three years and it works great, except ...

If you use VPN and want it to continue to function, don't upgrade your firmware to Release 10 (released in late 2003). Otherwise, you will be like me with a crippled router.

2.0 out of 5 stars Missing critical security features
Router is missing WPA. You cannot hide your SSID. And you can not limit access by MAC address. Otherwise, it works well.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT router, AWFUL print server, August 13, 2003

I've had this for several months. First of all the person who said there is no phone support is flat wrong -- I got phone support twice when I had problems setting it up (mostly my own doing, but see below). Second, DON'T but this if you do any serious printing. It is the slowest parallel port I have ever seen in my life. It also doesn't support bidirectional commuication, so that leaves out some printers, altogether. You can but a standalone print server for $... I suggest Intel Pro 10/100 (only that model), any Linksys, or a Hawking. Just DON'T USE THIS ONE for a print server!
.
Good points: Excellent range (much better than the SMC, for example). I can access it from anywhere inside the house or the yard, even with WEP enabled (OK, I bought the optional antenna so I could get to it from outside). It's fast, unobtrusivem and doesn't run hot. It has a switch to enable uplink with a standard cat5 cable if you run out of wired ports.
.
Bad points: My DSL kept turning off until I tweaked the factory security settings a little.

5.0 out of 5 stars static IP #s not required!!!, December 3, 2002

Very easy setup. Has a great set of features which will allow a home office using cable modems to setup their own webserver WITHOUT the need of a static IP number, since the router will automatically update the DNS entry for the site with Dynamic DNS org servers when ever the assigned IP number changes. Has a fair set of tools which will aid in preventing those nasty little hackers from invaiding your home network.

As for wireless range, it works as specd and more. I'm using it together with 3COM's XJACK PCMCIA adapter (3CRWE62092B), another great little winner. I've testing it by roaming all over my house , garage and outdoors. It still reported 11Mbps even at the corner of my large lot, and that's with the router located in the basement of the house.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy setup, great customer service, good range, October 16, 2002

All in all I'm really happy with this router with built-in print server. Especially the customer service. It was easy to set up, but I made a few bonehead moves. Worked with three customer service reps and each was knowledgable in their own right, plus they clearly had a good knowledge database to draw from. It has excellent range and I can roam all over my house with excellent connectivity and speed.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Technical Support, July 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Siemens SpeedStream Wireless DSL/Cable Router (SS2624) (Personal Computers)
I used 2623 wireless router for about a year. It required often
to reboot so I decided to download FW upgrade which should fix
this problem. After FW download, router stopped working completely.
There is no phone number to call for tech. support. I sent
two mail and still no response.
Never buy electronic product from company which does not
have phone support!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product, February 6, 2003

I just installed this yesterday. Installation was a breeze. I did not have any problems. I am also using the Dlink 650 card for the wireless part. The wireless signal quality on the wireless card application doesn't appear to be good, but i hardly notice a difference in speed. DHCP/NAT is not confugurable other than the 192.168.254 private IP range.

It has good features. I haven't really played with th eprint server yet.

Overall great product for a good price.

We have a simple wireless network at home with cable modem internet access, this router and access point, and we use two of the associated NICs (Siemens SpeedStream Wireless PCMCIA Card (SS1021)) for my wife's and my work laptops. I also have a wireless network in the office (using 802.11a technology), so when I get home I pop out the office NIC and pop in this NIC and it works great. With this setup, my wife and I can both sit in the living room and access the internet without wires, etc. It is great and now we don't have to "share" the internet connection. ;-) Actually, it is good because we both work from home a lot and this allows us to stay on top of e-mails and access resources on the net. I recommend this network for its ease of installation and operation. Truely plug and play.

This is a good wireless router... someone said the WEP didn't work on it but it works well, maybe he just got a defective one. The only bad thing about it i'd say is that well... doesn't have an on/off switch and i dunno how to turn it off besides unplugging it because it does get kind of hot after long time use but other than that.. great product buy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars used to be a good product till firmware upgrade- bad support, December 24, 2004

Have used this for the last 2 years and never had any issues. Recently, I decided to upgrade the firmware on this router.
Do not upgrade to V1.1 Release 10 for 2624 on their support website if you want your VPN to work. I know it is the router firmware because it used to work right before the upgrade.

Their support charges $45 to open an incident so I am trying to find a previous release of the firmware so that I can get my VPN connection to work again !!!
